Description:

"Candido" is an Italian word that means "candid", smooth things and feelings...
This theme is provided with this good feeling. :)

"Candido" is based on "Gray" theme by me and then Mint.
For the rest... There's two version of "Candido", (the Light one is a little bit bright, from #e7e7e7 to #eaeaea for the background, and it has different tabs).

I'm planning new colored versions and a package with a few modified window borders.
Please ask me before make any *color* mods, because I'm planning to do new colored versions in the future!
Please comment is you have found any bug or if you request some new features!

Suggestions are always welcome!

I like it! Some color variations would be cool too...not the overall theme, but maybe some of the highlights could have some color.

Because of all this, lokheed took his ball and went home. He removed Mint from gnome-look and DA...good grief people, they're just gnome themes!

Dont go spreading rumours there pal. You have no clue, and only speculation to this assumption. You haven't spoken with me or know of any of my motives.

Stop spreading FUD and move on with your life cause I don't think mine really should concern you.

No lokheed left way before this "incident".

Your down arrows are 4 tiny little blocks put into a configuration that you can not possibly copywrite! I hardly think its the mona lisa (using your words).

I am no "graphics artist" and just made the same arrow in about 5 mins.

You sir are a freaking cry baby, who has no clue about copywrites.

You say its people like me who get things started on gnome-look...look at all my posts and tell me Van disel if I made one smart ass, infammatory remark agaist anyone or any work here. What pissed me off is that you jumped on cimi for no reason but to be an ass...and I guess the guy is "laid back" enough to comply with your stupid demands. I would have told you to get lost. I can say that here. You know what I'm talking about. haha So go back to DA and make your gnome graphics and themes for window users. hahaha...thats the funny thing here...you followers are window users and you attack gnome users.

Real smart.

I'm done with your antics-its not worth it.

Man, my fault. I saw that you removed Mint from gnome-look then went to try to download it on DA. Last time I looked, it was on your main page on DA. I didn't see it so I thought you removed it from DA too. You have to click on your gallery to download it. Again my fault...sorry for jumping to conclusions, you can call me whatever names you want. :)

Your work is much appreciated btw...loving the new Firefox theme you've put out.

It's still on DA. At first sight of disappearance of lokheed's themes on gnome-look I rushed to DA and backed up most stuff, just in case ;)

I'd like to know what's going on tough (ok, it's not my buisness but still...) :(

Cimi don't get discouraged by this entire fiasco. Just put it behind you. Your work is as much appreciated as lokheed's. This is not a competition between artists as the critics would have everyone believe and the most mature people throughout this have been you and lokeed.

Well said respite, very well said. This was never meant as a stiffling of cimi's creative work. It was never meant as an attack on anyone's talents or workmanship.

Its a shame there arent more people like yourself respite. Epathy and intelligence are in short supply it seems. You certainly have my respect :)

 My Two Cents...

by BladeTech on: Mar 5 2006

Score 50%

cimi86: Please don't take this as bashing your work... I really like what you've done with the colors and feel of your theme. And I admire and respect the fact that you are willing to work with lokheed and respect his wishes. M

My comments are directed to those who seem to believe that lokeed has no right to govern the use of his own work.

Let me just say this... being someone who does alot of programming, graphic design, web design, and a number of other things, I for one do not appreciate it when someone tries to use my work as their own.

That said, it is up to the creator of any given work to decide how they want the said work to be used. If they choose to release it freely under the GPL, they can. If they choose an alternative license, such as the CC or even their own custom conditions, they still have that right.

In my experience, it doesn't matter what the restrictions on the license are... if you like someone's work and want to use it, just ask... often times they will not object, even if they usually adhere to a strict license. They will usually respect your judgement, as well as your work, for giving them this small consideration.

I must say, I've followed lokheed's work for some time, and I really admire what he's done. It's obvious that he has spent quality time paying attention to the finest details to ensure that the themes were perfect. *This* is why he cares about the small things like scrollbar buttons and shadows... because even something so simple may have taken hours to fine tune so that it looked just right for the theme that he was designing.

If you say you can do the same design in five minutes, great... then do it. Sure, you can make something that looks similar to his, and that's fine... but if you are going to use his work instead of doing it yourself, then by all means be prepared to comply to any restrictions he has set.

It's his right to do so, and you have no right to say otherwise.

I've asked permission to lokheed... other people said that he can't copywrite arrows because they are so simple.

Honestly, I'm not sure on the legalities of that, but to me the point is more whether or not anyone can freely reuse the said images. If I really like the look of his scrollbar buttons, I might just use them for inspiration, and create something similar in appearance, likely tweaking them to better fit what I am using them for.

If I don't wish to do this, or I just can't get the same effect, and want to use the actual images he has created, then that is a different concept. In this case I should ask the author, who will usually say "sure, go right ahead". It's just the common curtesy of asking permission to use someone's work.

In this case, with your theme, I can fully understand why you did not ask, seeing that your understanding was the theme had been GPL'ed at the time you began work. Under the GPL, the only restriction is to cite the original author in the credits. However, I find it polite to notify the author even then. No, it's not required, but it is a nice thing to do. Besides, they can often give valuable input on your work.

Good work with the theme though, and I'm glad to see that you were able to work out an agreement with lokheed.

Spoken like a true artist and one who truly understands the workings behing my motives and behind it all (and quite eloquently I might add).

Its funny, whenever I am confronted with some shmuck who says my work is nothing special, I recall a guy who would go around and look at people work. The work was good and bad: a mixed bag of sorts. So for the bad, he would just snicker, the good he would quickly find out what was used and recite aloud (like a recipe list) what tecniques were used in a sarcastic tone. "Oh, that's easy, a joke, nothing but a lense flaire, contrast up, colour down, add one pixel border..." he would spew and conclude that the work was poor.

I was blown away at how some people think. Here is a perfect example on how simplicity: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/29500520/

He was awarded a DD for his work and no doubt time. But I think all of us can do what he did ;) Does it take away from it? Not one bit.

Thanks for the kind words on my work. I think those that are art appreciators and those that have an eye for art, can see the great amount of effort I put into my work. Those are the people I cater too, people like yourself. The haters can go whistle for all I care ;)

Exactly my point. In reality, there is very little that can be done by one person that others cannot do... granted that it may only take someone five minutes to do the exact same work it may take another hours to complete.

Even then, work created by a person belongs to that person, no matter how simple or abstract it may be. Look at the great artists of our time, and it's not hard to see this. People have made millions of dollars by throwing balls of paint at a blank canvas. Yeah, even a toddler could do that. But, in creating that piece the artist is conveying a feeling, sharing something with the world. No one has the right to say that their work is invalid because it's too simple.

A better way to portray this might be this:

Imagine that lokheed's scrollbar arrows are used in a handful of GPL'ed themes, such as Candido. Then newer themes are created, based on those themes. Under the GPL, lokheed's name is still in the credits somewhere. But, then along comes a company, say Microsoft, and they decide to use one of those themes as their base for a new version of Windows. You think they are going to give any credit to lokheed? Probably not. In fact, they likely won't even acknowledge that the work was GPL'ed in the first place. Or, they might, and they might hire whoever designed the incarnation of the work, oblivious that it was actually created by someone else. Then the images are put to use in the latest version of Windows, or whatever the case is, and millions of machines end up displaying that work, and making money from their product. Is lokheed going to get any credit from this? Nope.

Ok, so that's a little far fetched, but I think it illustrates my point. All that is being done is someone is trying to protect their intellectual property. As you all can see by cmi86's update, lokheed has generously worked out an agreement so that cmi86 could use his work. It's not that he (or any artist) wants to be the "big bad" and go around policing others, we just want to make sure that our work is protected. That's the point of granting a licence to work. It's not just a big block of text meant to fill whitespace and be ignored, it actually has meaning behind it.

In my opinion, if you still think that lokheed is wrong for wanting to protect his property, then you can just unplug your computer, box it up and take it back to the store because you are too stupid to be using it.

I'm done ranting now, but hopefully those who read my posts will realize what the issue really is and understand why it *is* a big deal.

Hey when you do work for someone, you track all the hours.

I dont charge my clients an amount based on finished product, I charge the entire time spent. Sure it might take 8 hours to find 30 ways you don't want a button to look like, and only 8 minutes to get it exactly how you do want it. What's the total billable hours? 8.

Creative work doesn't spring foreward; everything in life requires planning and insight. Not unlike inventing.

It took 200 attempts to create electricity. When attacked by the media, Edison replied: "I didn't waste all that time, I found 200 ways NOT to make electricity."

If one can understand the moral behind that story, well they probably understand a lot more about art and about science ;)

Point is you cant look at a finished product and sum up its parts. Because a piece is much more than the sum of its parts.

 a little bug

He very nice theme. So simple but so beautiful.

1 thing, I think I found a "bug". When I use candido as theme and I run a program as root (sudo gedit for example) the theme candido isn't used, instead it uses an old gnome theme.

Look for your self: http://www.shinebox.nl/misc/candido.png

the first one is run als root, the other as normal user.

I use ubuntu 5.10.

This is not a bug with the theme. This is because the root user has it's own gtkrc file which specifies the theme to use. Have a look at /root/.gtkrc-2.0, or even better, you could just

sudo gnome-theme-manager

or

sudo switch2

if you have the theme switcher installed.
