Description:

The original Comix Cursors.

X11 mouse theme with a comics feeling.
The package comes with 12 different mouse themes for X11.
6 colors (black, blue, green, orange, red and white)
2 different weights (slim and normal)

From version 0.8 on the cursors are 'multisize', meaning that you don't need to install one theme for each size, but only one theme, and chose the size in the cursor theme selection dialog.

The full installation also includes left-handed themes, you can choose whatever you prefer from the downloads below.

The cursors are named according to the freedesktop.org cursor naming convention, compatibility and hash cursor names are linked. In addition to the original cursor pack left-handed and opaque versions are still available here.

Please read the README and INSTALL files provided in the source package for installation and packaging instructions, as well as some hints on various issues.

"Vast" versions for visually impaired can be downloaded here: http://www.limitland.de/comixcursors.html . There are links for windows ports by firstfooter, teft and Jus on that page as well.

If you don't like the "hair" line for the text-, vertical-text- and crosshair-cursors, you can download the "NOHAIR"-sources below and replace the source files "text.svg", "vertical-text.svg" and "crosshair.svg" sources in the svg/LeftHanded and svg/RightHanded source-directories and build your cursors. These cursors might look better to you e.g. on dark backgrounds.

GNOME USERS:
------------
Ben has investigated how to configure the cursor size:

* Gnome supports multiple cursor sizes in one cursor theme, but only
distinct sizes: 16, 24, 32, and 48 pixels.

There is no known Gnome 3 application for setting the size of the mouse
cursor. You need to set the desired size in pixels as the value of the
DConf setting ‘org.gnome.desktop.interface.cursor-size’. You can use
‘dconf-editor’ (from the ‘dconf-tools’ package) or ‘gsettings’ to change
DConf settings.

ComixCursors come in sizes 32, 40, 48 and 64.

For me (kde-3.5.0) it's the first mouse-theme, that DOESN`T show default-xcursors anywhere :)
Oh, men, I`m so happy :D

Really nice work

Add this line to the Makefile to fix the question_arrow problem in firefox

ln -sf question_arrow $(CURSORDIR)/5c6cd98b3f3ebcb1f9c7f1c204630408 #mozilla's question_arrow

Why did you NOT adding my line as I suggested? Now the question_arrow still doesn't work right in firefox. Is it really a pain to add another symlink?

These cursors are really gorgeous man, keep up the good work! They fit VERY nicely into the look of my desktop with the thin keramik window decorations and comix widget style. ;)

Only trouble I'm having is that Firefox completely ignores them and uses the default black X cursors... Could it be because I'm using the Mandriva RPM for Firefox instead of Mozilla's installer?

Thanks. I must say that i just don't know why there is trouble with firefox. Does your firefox diplay the core cursors with other mouse-themes (whiteglass, crystal, ...) as well? I cannot really imagine that somthing is wrong with your distros packages, but you might just try the mozilla installer.
If there is an answer out there let us know.

I've noticed the X cursors show up in other GTK-based apps too, such as Gaim, the Gimp, and Mandriva Control Center. However, in those apps its not all of the time, only for the text entry and hyperlink cursors. Firefox uses X cursors all of the time. I'll try out another cursor theme and let you know.

Thanks!

Hi Hintzy,

looking at Firefox I found this:

# grep cursor /opt/MozillaFirefox/lib/res/EditorOverride.css
/* Primary cursor is text I-beam */
cursor: text;
Override the browser's pointer cursor over links
cursor: default;
cursor: text;
cursor: nw-resize;
cursor: n-resize;
cursor: ne-resize;
cursor: w-resize;
cursor: e-resize;
cursor: sw-resize;
cursor: s-resize;
cursor: se-resize;
cursor: move;

so I would figure mozilla wants the css/freedesktop cursors? I don't know why it works on my box, maybe it is related to these strange hash-links. Anyway: please download a litte script here: http://www.limitland.com/freedesktopCursors.bash , which will link existing cursors to the CSS/freedesktop naming convention. And tell me wheter it worked for you or not.

Thanks

I keep forgetting to come back and update you on my progress!

I ran your script and, at the time, nothing changed. However, shortly after that, I reinstalled the i586 version of Mandriva 2006, since I was having problems with some 3rd party apps under x86_64 and had decided the performance boost wasn't worth the hassle for now. As usual, I formatted the root partition, but left /home alone. On the first boot, the comix cursors showed up and work everywhere! The only minor caveat is that firefox displays the open hand cursor on links instead of the pointing hand, but I'm honestly not worried about that.

I really have no idea what the problem was before! :-p Perhaps its just another quirk of 64 vs 32 bit, like something looking for /lib when it needs /lib64 or something like that...

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that the cursors are working everywhere now and I love it! Thanks again for all your hard work!
