Description:

Clearlooks is new modern looking engine, based on Bluecurve. It has the looks of various themes blended together, resulting in a theme that's easy on the eyes and visually pleasing ;)

The difference with pixmap based themes, is that it does not sacrifice a lot of speed.

Since it's an engine, the installation differs from a 'normal' theme. Just run "./configure --prefix=/usr && make install" and you should be set.

Note: make sure that ~/.gtkrc-2.0 is not overriding a theme, as it has priority over the theme managers.

When updating from a previous version of Clearlooks keep in mind that applications still running will continue to use the old version of the engine. Switching themes may cause incompatibilities with the new theme definition. Those applications will then revert to the default GTK look. When this happens you will have to restart those applications. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Now, drool at the screenshots, and enjoy using it :)

!!!!!!!!!!!! NOTE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As of version 0.4, there is an optional animated progressbar. It has to be enabled manually by the brave. To do this, install it with "./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-animation" followed by "make install" as root.

GTK+ developers consider this new feature a horrible hack. But it's cool! We've tested it quite well, and it doesn't break anything we know of. If an application crashes, make sure that Clearlooks isn't the cause. If it is, please notify me.

!!!!!!!!!! ANOTHER NOTE !!!!!!!!

Clearlooks has a mailinglist. If you have a question, please send it there. The address is:

 Great

Mate, this is great. I never thought I'd replace my Industrial with anything. But this is just plain simple&great.

Keep up the great work.
But:
1) I think there are some performance issues.
2) Applications in the taskbar should be somehow spaced.

Why should the menus look like buttons? Now that makes no sense to me. ;)
Menus are simply lists and we don't use rounded edges either for treeviews, textboxes or frames.
However, the new menus should be considered experimental and we'll listen very carefully for feedback.

I agree they'd look better rounded, but I also think they look better now than they did. What sticks out to me now is that now the progressbar is the only thing left to the old bluecurve feel and I think they'd be better as the menuitem.

Yes, we have something special planned for the progress bar. :D
We tried using the new menu look for it but couldn't decide if it was an improvement or not, so we decided to stick with the current one for now and work on a "proper" replacement after the release.

well, the part that doesn't make much sense is that almost everything is rounded, except for menues and maybe something else that i'm missing.
i'm a graphic designer and i've learnt that if you'r making a rounded/smooth theme (or engine in this case) then you should make everything rounded/smooth.
this theme is rounded, not completely smooth, but definitively rounded... if you want to make it smoother then you could remove/change the black outline on some controls (like tabs and scrollbars).

hehe... i'm always missing something... there should be an edit option so that way i wouldn't post extra comments...

anyway, you say "we don't use rounded edges either for treeviews, textboxes or frames.", are you sure textboxes aren't rounded?... they look pretty rounded to me ;)

I meant textviews. :) Only entries are rounded, but the larger boxes (check gedit or gaim) are not. There are other cases where we don't use rounded edges because it looks better, mainly treeview headers.
I really don't want to make a theme which simply slaps a rounded edge on everything, because I don't think that this looks good at all, consistency or not. Notice that Luna or Aqua don't use rounded edges for everything either and especially not for menus.

The new menus are great, i love them!
Thanks, that was the most annoying thing in ClearLooks IMO. Very much looking forward to progress bars.

 Epiphany

Hi there,

your great looking engine got even better.
But I also noticed, that epiphany's entry box and scrollbars aren't themed. Is this a known bug?

Yes, it's a known problem and we can't solve it right now, because Epiphany is using a hack to embed the favicon in the locationbar. Instead of just using an entrybox, they are using a borderless entrybox and then put a frame around it. In other themes like Crux or Glider it looks even worse. Hopefully it will soon be possible to embed images in entry boxes directly, so Epiphany can get rid of this hack.

About the scrollbars, that's the Firefox problem which Richard mentioned above. Right now it seems impossible to find out if a button is the start of the end of a scrollbar with Firefox, because they are not using Gtk in the usual way. :/

this version like the last version causes EOG (eye of gnome) to crash when i open any image file. i need to see this bug fixed it if this theme is to be considered useable. other than that i really like these themes and the engine.

Hmm, I use eog all the time and it does not crash for me. I'm using version 2.9.0, it was probably fixed at some point?
