Description:

Clearlooks is new modern looking engine, based on Bluecurve. It has the looks of various themes blended together, resulting in a theme that's easy on the eyes and visually pleasing ;)

The difference with pixmap based themes, is that it does not sacrifice a lot of speed.

Since it's an engine, the installation differs from a 'normal' theme. Just run "./configure --prefix=/usr && make install" and you should be set.

Note: make sure that ~/.gtkrc-2.0 is not overriding a theme, as it has priority over the theme managers.

When updating from a previous version of Clearlooks keep in mind that applications still running will continue to use the old version of the engine. Switching themes may cause incompatibilities with the new theme definition. Those applications will then revert to the default GTK look. When this happens you will have to restart those applications. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Now, drool at the screenshots, and enjoy using it :)

!!!!!!!!!!!! NOTE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As of version 0.4, there is an optional animated progressbar. It has to be enabled manually by the brave. To do this, install it with "./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-animation" followed by "make install" as root.

GTK+ developers consider this new feature a horrible hack. But it's cool! We've tested it quite well, and it doesn't break anything we know of. If an application crashes, make sure that Clearlooks isn't the cause. If it is, please notify me.

!!!!!!!!!! ANOTHER NOTE !!!!!!!!

Clearlooks has a mailinglist. If you have a question, please send it there. The address is:
http://sourceforge.net/mail/?group_id=129376

THE METACITY THEME HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THIS PACKAGE. You should get it seperately from http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=21237

 please hang on! :)

As y'all might have noticed, there was no new release last weekend. That's because I've been working on a website at http://clearlooks.sourceforge.net. It will contain a voting booth where you can vote for concepts. And maybe some other suprises, too :)

Development is still progressing though!

Don't get too distracted with the website, it's not that important.

Heheh, I wish I could worry about silly things like that. School is taking my time again :(

No worries though, I've done some clearlooks engine work today. Expect a new release soon!

And about the website. It *is* very important. I need it to get user input. I only know what I like, but not what other people like, so the website will essentially be an aid in development.

I'm eagerly expecting the next release with half-rounded scrollbars. You should post betas somewhere :) Also, don't pay too much attention to user requests. Many good themes that were once great tried to accomodate everyone and became riddled with too many bells and whistles. The only way to ensure consistency is by staying true to your original design ideas.

Just FYI, your theme is being discussed on Gnome's development mailing list :

second that. I tried to replicate the look of that screenshot, but got nowhere.. The icons aren't spaced, I got ugly buttons at the end of my panel, ...

This comes really close to how gnome should look by default, imho. Can anyone provide a guide on how to replicate this screenshot?
Thanks!

The desktop you see in the screenshots is not the gnome desktop, but xfce (http://www.xfce.org).
You have to install xfce to get the same appearance.

 focus rings

I like the theme engine. I'd like to request a minor usability feature, focus rings. The reason I use smooth today is because it implements focus rings around all widgets.

As as themer and user, I'd love to see clearlooks implement this. Good job, your engine looks great.

 panel size

I really want the Window List in the bottom to panel to span to rows. This only happens when the size is set to 44 or more. On other themes is slighly less which means the panel takes up less space. Is it possible to do something about this?

btw, if the metacity included is the one in the screenshot, it looks like 5 others we already have. Winter goes with the engine more IMO. I'm not complaining because I hate doing mcity. Just thought something different, that goes with the theme, would be nice.

Well, the goal of this theme isn't to be different, but to be good. :)
At first the theme was based on Winter (which isn't really that much different either), but I just couldn't get the buttons to look right, so in the end (a few hours before release) I decided to base it off of Industrial and keep the buttons as they are for now.
The titlebar and border are still considerably different to Industrial and I think that it adds a unique touch to it.

If someone has a great idea for a re-design of the buttons (which is simplistic, attractive and usable at the same time), then I'd be very open to it.

diff doesn't imply unusable and nonsimplistic. Winters rounded titlebar and buttons are very diff from the same old generic mcity we have 5+ versions of yet it is still simple and very usable. I understand though, mcity can be a bear which is why I said I'm not complaining. IMO, it should definately have rounded titlebars and buttons though.

No, different isn't bad, I'm just saying that I don't care a lot about not being different. ;)
Clearlooks has rounded titlebar borders and it even has rounded bottom edges, unlike Industrial and Winter. ;) I'm looking into making the titlebar buttons rounded again, but I failed to get it look right with Winter. The problem were the buttons on inactive windows (which the original XFWM theme doesn't have).
