Description:

Clearlooks is new modern looking engine, based on Bluecurve. It has the looks of various themes blended together, resulting in a theme that's easy on the eyes and visually pleasing ;)

The difference with pixmap based themes, is that it does not sacrifice a lot of speed.

Since it's an engine, the installation differs from a 'normal' theme. Just run "./configure --prefix=/usr && make install" and you should be set.

Note: make sure that ~/.gtkrc-2.0 is not overriding a theme, as it has priority over the theme managers.

When updating from a previous version of Clearlooks keep in mind that applications still running will continue to use the old version of the engine. Switching themes may cause incompatibilities with the new theme definition. Those applications will then revert to the default GTK look. When this happens you will have to restart those applications. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Now, drool at the screenshots, and enjoy using it :)

As of version 0.4, there is an optional animated progressbar. It has to be enabled manually by the brave. To do this, install it with "./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-animation" followed by "make install" as root.

GTK+ developers consider this new feature a horrible hack. But it's cool! We've tested it quite well, and it doesn't break anything we know of. If an application crashes, make sure that Clearlooks isn't the cause. If it is, please notify me.

hi, im getting this error with ubuntu:

after running ./configure --prefix=/usr
...
checking for gtk+-2.0 >= 2.0.0... Package gtk+-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `gtk+-2.0.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'gtk+-2.0' found
configure: error: GTK+-2.0 is required to compile clearlooks-engine

what should I do?

Great theme, it's my favourite. The only thing I doan't like is the highlight effect on the active menu entry.

What window borders were you using on the screen shots? Is it really Nuvola? Nuvola looks different on my machine, and I really dig those window borders, which would make a almost perfect theme even better. Please help.

Remenic's wm is xfce4, not metacity. However I know that someone is currently porting it to metacity. I have it and if they won't finish it I will :D

Please also note that weird artifacts appear when you use openoffice 2.0 ( http://download.openoffice.org/680/index.html#intro )
with this theme. Mostly, the menus all appear transparent. I know the 2.0 is still beta, but it's something to look for.

What?!!! I fixed it on the same day I released 0.2.2 but thought it wouldn't be such a big deal (with OOo being beta after all) so I didn't release an update... Still, I'm glad that the OOo folks fixed it on their part as well.

Guess what, I just finished adding the new scrollbars! I'm not releasing it just yet, though (probably saturday).

But not all is good. Firefox is really pissing me off lately. Every kind of 'trick' that I perform to give Clearlooks a polished look is failing miserably. While most 'artifacts' aren't clearly visible and won't bother anyone but the nitpicker, the scrollbars are a greater deal.

It's TERRIBLE! Firefox doesn't tell me the position of the scrollbars, so I can't determine whether a scrollbutton is the first of last button on the scrollbar. The result is that rounding isn't applied, so they look squared. This most likely happens with OpenOffice.org as well, since they are both very bad at pretending to be GTK+ apps.

But that's not all... I'm not sure if I like the half-rounded look of the scrollbars...

There are four things I can do now:
1) don't care about firefox, keep the roundings.
2) keep it squared like it was.
3) think of something else
4) make all corners rounded (like industrial)

Please let me know what you guys 'n girls think!

If you've got a good idea for a scrollbar, please email me some mockups!
If you're a coder an know how to make rounding work in Firefox as well, please email me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if by "all" you mean all corners in the scrollbar, yes, that has my vote. Otherwise, I say ignore firefox and round the ends. Oh...I use epiphany :P

I don't know why, but I kind of like the whole rounded look of the scrollbars now. I tried it before, but I thought it looked stupid... If I still like it tomorrow, I'm going with this look.

Unless anyone has a better idea?

Looks pretty neat to me. I don't use Firefox either (Epiphany), so I don't care about its issues :-)

Btw, if Firefox doesn't tell you which button is being drawn, how do you tell what kind of arrow (up/down) to paint? Or is that another step or widget? If so, one could imagine a hack that doesn't draw the scrollbuttons when first requested but only then when drawing the arrow is requested.
(Please disregard if what I say does not make any sense to you :) )

Unless I'm mistaken it looks like there are two seperate functions that get called to draw the scrollbar buttons. The first draws the button itself, the second draws an arrow. The problem (correct me if I'm wrong) is that the button function was not passed an arrow direction, only the arrow function, so you can't tell which button is being drawn, just that you are being asked to draw a button.

To be honest I really like the first screenshot. This doesn't mean I don't like the "rounded-everything" look, as I do like it.

I like the fact that the rounded edges only on the outside of the entire scrollbar give it a "whole" kind of look, as in, "look I'm a single widget" or something. Don't know why but it appeals to me ;-)

That said, for consistency purposes the other style is better.

I think Firefox and OpenOffice.org are problematic for most themes, and I vote to ignore them.

Thank you very much for your comment. I have been running the half-rounded scrollbar theme for a few days now, and it hasn't bothered me at all, even though I run Firefox a lot :)

So I'll probably keep the half rounded (rounded only at the outside) look for the next version. Maybe eventually the Firefox people will try to make their app behave a little better.

I compiled and instaled clearlooks with no problem, but themes doesn't appear in the "theme changer", i'm using ubuntu "hoary" with gnome 2.9.4. Any solution?.

You should choose 'Theme Details' in gnome-theme-manager and then in the 'Controls' tab there should be a few Clearlooks themes.

If that's not the case, make sure you installed it with --prefix=/usr. If you did and it still doesn't work, then please let me know and I'll install Ubuntu Hoary (what a horrible name).

occationally the comboboxes won't stay down when dropped down. They just pop right back up. You can get around this by clicking and holding down the mouse button>selecting>then releasing so it's no big deal, yet. Thought you might wanna know. Could be a gtk2-2.6.1 ubuntu hoary issue I guess.

Yes, it's only clearlooks, well smooth is the only other engine I use and it doesn't do it with it. Also happened in epiphany's bookmarks that go beyond the screen resolution with the last version of the engine, not the latest.
