Description:

Clearlooks is new modern looking engine, based on Bluecurve. It has the looks of various themes blended together, resulting in a theme that's easy on the eyes and visually pleasing ;)

The difference with pixmap based themes, is that it does not sacrifice a lot of speed.

Since it's an engine, the installation differs from a 'normal' theme. Just run "./configure --prefix=/usr && make install" and you should be set.

Note: make sure that ~/.gtkrc-2.0 is not overriding a theme, as it has priority over the theme managers.

When updating from a previous version of Clearlooks keep in mind that applications still running will continue to use the old version of the engine. Switching themes may cause incompatibilities with the new theme definition. Those applications will then revert to the default GTK look. When this happens you will have to restart those applications. Sorry for the inconvenience.

As of version 0.4, there is an optional animated progressbar. It has to be enabled manually by the brave. To do this, install it with "./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-animation" followed by "make install" as root.

GTK+ developers consider this new feature a horrible hack. But it's cool! We've tested it quite well, and it doesn't break anything we know of. If an application crashes, make sure that Clearlooks isn't the cause. If it is, please notify me.

This theme is incredible. Thank you so much!

I recommend using ClearlooksBlueish with the Chiro Metacity theme, the Suede icon set, and the GNOME-Waves2 background.

This is a very good theme, I especially like the Milk variation. Too bad you can't use it with most metacity themes though (the color of the window title is set to black and it clashes with the title shadow...)

I'm looking forward to your work on scrollbars.

what mcity themes? I've used Milk, RMilk, RMilk-Black, Chriro, Outcrop, Edge's, and probably others and have no prob. This can sometimes be changed in the gtkrc but the white on blk scheme will be a prob with some mcity themes. If you tell me which ones I'll see if there's a happy medium in there somewhere that I can change.

For example use the industrial metacity theme with clearlooks : the window border is gray (which is ok), but the title text appears in black with a black shadow. It's still readable, but it doesn't look very good.

I see. Open ClearlooksMilk/gtk-2.0/gtkrc
and scroll all the way down to the metacity frames section at the bottom. About line 149 you'll see
#fg[SELECTED] = "black"

if you want white
fg[SELECTED] = "#ffffff"
save the file and reset the theme. If you want a diff color use any color picker to get what you want.

I use gnome with 1280x1024, and the fonts is very ugly!!.

Hello,

I use a Debian with OpenOffice 1.1.3-4. I installed too a Gtk UI Plugin in order to apply gtk theme for openoffice.
When I open a window with tabs, openoffice crash. Is it a bug plugin or a bug in your engine ?

Is that Ximian OpenOffice.org, or something else?

I have debian installed inside a virtual machine, but I'm not very familiar with it, so if you could tell me how to install it then I can try to hunt down the bug.

No it's just openoffice provided with Debian Sid (Unstable). If you want to install openoffice and the plugin just execute "apt-get install openoffice.org openoffice.org-gtk-gnome".
After that run openoffice in gnome environment. If the application doesn't apply the theme, try to change OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome in /etc/openoffice/openoffice.org.

Also, please consider submitting this theme at http://art.gnome.org. I think your theme has a lot of potential, it looks very sleek and polished, much like plastik under kde, but is still fast. This is the kind of themes gnome needs.

Could you do a version without gradients, or at least without a gradient under the "File Edit ..." menu bar? I think that gradient makes it look a bit too busy, and it also affects the Applications/Actions applet (which makes it look a bit odd).

Oh, you also may want to consider using Ximian's stock icons (from the Industrial theme) for the blueish, bluey, ana, and milk variations. They seem like they would fit better; the standard green icons look odd with the blue and pale themes.

I also agree with the comment above about the text in the titlebars. It's difficult to read when it is dark (in the green, lime, ana, and milk variations).

Concerning the title text in ana and milk I contributed:
The colors were simply copied from there pixmap originals. These are intended to go with their originals or variations like RMilk or WelcomeBack metacity's etc...just allowing the lighter engine based gtk.

In above post I explain how this can be changed but I don't see it being the default for them. However, I contributed them to the engine download and Remenic is free to change them however he wants. So it's up to him. You will then have users complaining that the font is bad in their intended mcity's though.

Unfortunately, we can't make everyone happy.

I see what you mean. Looking at some other metacity themes, the dark text works. The ones it generally doesn't work in are the ones that change background colors to suit the GTK2 theme. I guess it's impossible to find something that works in all themes.

However, could it work if a color wasn't specified in the gtkrc, just letting metacity choose the color? I believe that's what bluecurve does, and it seems to work fairly adequately (but not always optimally--and perhaps it's only because all the bluecurve themes are fairly dark).

if no color is specified then the gtk default is used. Again the easiest is to specify the text colors in the gtkrc's metacity frames section. If you use several combos then just copy the theme somewhere>make the change>rename it to reflect which mcity it's used with and put it in the themes dir.

That's the best suggestion I can think of. I have several like this.

I've changed it to white, and it looks much better now with my metacity decoration.

The green variation is particularly nice.

This is probably annoying you, but I have yet another suggestion. Could you sharpen the corners of the buttons in the window list? At small panel sizes (24 pixels in my case), the rounded buttons look odd. I think the Industrial theme does this fairly well.

If you want, you can disable the 'deep' menubar by editing /usr/share/themes/ClearlooksGreen/gtk-2.0/gtkrc.
Look for the line that says "sunkenmenubar = 1" and change it to "sunkenmenubar = 0".

I might consider creating a sort of "Clearlooks customizer" where you can configure colors and other features.
