Description:

Clearlooks is new modern looking engine, based on Bluecurve. It has the looks of various themes blended together, resulting in a theme that's easy on the eyes and visually pleasing ;)

The difference with pixmap based themes, is that it does not sacrifice a lot of speed.

Since it's an engine, the installation differs from a 'normal' theme. Just run "./configure --prefix=/usr && make install" and you should be set.

Note: make sure that ~/.gtkrc-2.0 is not overriding a theme, as it has priority over the theme managers.

When updating from a previous version of Clearlooks keep in mind that applications still running will continue to use the old version of the engine. Switching themes may cause incompatibilities with the new theme definition. Those applications will then revert to the default GTK look. When this happens you will have to restart those applications. Sorry for the inconvenience.

As of version 0.4, there is an optional animated progressbar. It has to be enabled manually by the brave. To do this, install it with "./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-animation" followed by "make install" as root.

GTK+ developers consider this new feature a horrible hack. But it's cool! We've tested it quite well, and it doesn't break anything we know of. If an application crashes, make sure that Clearlooks isn't the cause. If it is, please notify me.

Looks really nice! I have some (hopefully constructive) criticism though:

- the highlight for the current menuitem looks like it's still the one from the redhat theme(?). It's too strong and lacks rounded edges. Maybe some simple bevel-effect would suffice?

- scrollbars lack those nice rounded edges you used for buttons and other components, too.

- the edges of buttons, tabs and especially toolbuttons could be a little bit weaker with less contrast, similar to the strength of menuitem-separators or the line between toolbars.

That said, it's still the best non-pixmap/svg theme I've seen so far. Thank you!

I have changed the menuitem highlight to make it more round. It looks better now.

I'm not sure if making the contrast lighter will make the theme look better per se. It might make it harder to focus on the button, but I'm not sure.

I have had an idea for the scrollbar, but I haven't been able to realize it yet. If you look at the mockup at http://www.stellingwerff.com/clearlooks/scrollbar2.png then you can see what I had in mind. It's not a big change, but it does look better. Rounding all the edges is feasable, but does not look as nice.

That change to the scrollbar looks nice (rounding the buttons, but not the slider). If you take a look at LighthouseBlue, you see how it looks if you do both — not bad, but not as good, either.

I'm looking forward to version 0.2. I've made a Fedora Core 3 rpm of 0.1, which might help some of the newbies with installation issues. I'm also converting some of my (unreleased) gtkrc themes which use a mixture of Bluecurve and LighthouseBlue to use ClearLooks, instead, as it gives a similar but slightly better effect. Have you addressed the gtk-1.x issue (i.e., providing a suitable gtkrc for gtk-1, even if you don't provide the engine)?

The mockup looks really nice. Same goes for the new menus and menuitem highlights. Really good job!

In regards to the button contrast, is it possible to adjust this from the theme file? (Or is it possible to add support for this?) I think it's mostly the toolbuttons which would profit from a little less contrast on the edges.

Finally, is there anything that can be done about the additional black border created by tabs as shown in http://www.nyda.info/misc/clearlooks.png (compare window with and without tabs)? I think the window looks a lot better without the inner border created by the tab, but you can't just leave it away either, right? Maybe make it beveled in grey instead of complete black?

Anyways, thanks for this nice update!

Hi, when I run the given command, I get an error at a point:


checking for gtk+-2.0 >= 2.0.0... Package gtk+-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `gtk+-2.0.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'gtk+-2.0' found
configure: error: GTK+-2.0 is required to compile redhat-artwork


Please help, I'm running Ubuntu.

This is really nice looking. Thank you!

I've been looking through the source and am going to play with it a bit (I've never made a theme engine before, but the actual drawing code doesn't really look that complicated). It's mostly gdk and math.

That screenshot of the upcoming version 0.2 looks great. The scrollbars in 0.1 are one of the things that bug me a bit, and they look much better in the shot.

Also, might I suggest a rounded progress bar as well? A rounded bar with a simpler gradient to match the rest of the theme, or did you have something else in mind?

Is there a repository or somewhere we can grab the latest sources? If not, I would suggest creating a Sourceforge.net project for the engine so others (like me) could try to help out.

I'm sorry to report that 0.2 still has those hideous scrollbars... It appears to be a pita to figure out whether I'm drawing the top/left or bottom/right button, since they are both called the same...

Progressbar and menu(item)s are rounded this time, and the gradients are slightly different too.

There's no repository yet. I will create a project on sf.net soon, when I have some time.

Nice work.

Personal opinion, I like the gradient used on tabs and buttons (convex), I think it would look good of the menu item hilight used a similar bevel (currently it looks concave, like Bluecurve).

Again, nice work.

Clearlooks seems to be the cause of an Evo crash when viewing the calendar component. I don't know if it happens with the stable branch or not (2.0).

Remenic, to give you an idea of what you maybe can do to the engine, in pixmap themes this is the fix. I just did it to ClearlooksMilk. Get this file
