Description:

Clearlooks is new modern looking engine, based on Bluecurve. It has the looks of various themes blended together, resulting in a theme that's easy on the eyes and visually pleasing ;)

The difference with pixmap based themes, is that it does not sacrifice a lot of speed.

Since it's an engine, the installation differs from a 'normal' theme. Just run "./configure --prefix=/usr && make install" and you should be set.

Note: make sure that ~/.gtkrc-2.0 is not overriding a theme, as it has priority over the theme managers.

When updating from a previous version of Clearlooks keep in mind that applications still running will continue to use the old version of the engine. Switching themes may cause incompatibilities with the new theme definition. Those applications will then revert to the default GTK look. When this happens you will have to restart those applications. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Now, drool at the screenshots, and enjoy using it :)

As of version 0.4, there is an optional animated progressbar. It has to be enabled manually by the brave. To do this, install it with "./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-animation" followed by "make install" as root.

GTK+ developers consider this new feature a horrible hack. But it's cool! We've tested it quite well, and it doesn't break anything we know of. If an application crashes, make sure that Clearlooks isn't the cause. If it is, please notify me.

Applied patch from Cary Coady to fix a segfault when progressbar has no parent.

Fixed wrong rendering of combobox in some themes.
Consistent rendering of buttons in glade and gimp.
Compatability fix for GTK 2.2 from Hongli Lai.
Forgot to mention new listview headers in 0.6.0!

New menuitem style.
Listview item gradients enabled by default.
Tweaked radio- and checkboxes.
New checkmark graphic from Steven Garrity.
New gradient on buttons.
Buttons appear semi-sunken (with new themes).
Fixed GtkNotebook colors in glade and gaim (and others).
Menubar gradient slightly lighter so accommodate border-less WM themes.

If you want to be up to date:

rename it to gtk-engines-clearlooks-0.4.ebuild

copy it to x11-themes/gtk-engines-clearlooks in your portage overlay directory

download clearlooks 0.4 to /usr/portage/distfiles/

ebuild gtk-engines-clearlooks-0.4.ebuild digest

add it to your /etc/portage/package.keywords

finally emerge the sucker

Sounds like a big deal? Well, it's worth it :)

I guess you need X.Org server for that. And in there, you should enable Composite extensions and run composite manager. There's also a nice GUI on gnomefiles.org, IIRC

M'thinks he's using a window manager that supports transparency (xfce?) not metacity, the gentoo default. There's a patch around for metacity transparency, though.

I think that the font is Trebuchet(or Tahoma maybe). Its WinXP default font.

Please please remove the stripes- on the tabs and on the progress bar. Both are uncalled for and ruin the sleekness of Clearlooks.

Oops- I apologize for sounding so coarse. I wrote that in a playful sense but it did not come off that way.

I have nothing but the greatest respect for programmers who share their time and talent with the free software world so I would never want to come off sounding rude or unappreciative. The Clearlooks developers have contributed something great to the community and how they choose to use their time should be entirely up to them.

However, as a user who still does not have polished coding skills, all that I can contribute to your project would be bug reports or usability feedback. I have not found any bugs so I'm offering the latter: I think that Clearlooks has amazing potential but at the same time I cannot help being put off by the striped progress bars.

The progressbars are the way they are explicitly for usability reasons. See this for the reasing behind it:

I understand that eye candy is not popular among geeks, but to "ban" it, we'd need a much better reason. :) That said, there'll most likely be a gtkrc option for flat progressbars in the next release, for all those "leet themes".

I appreciate your explaining the reason behind its implementation but perhaps the animation could be done in a more subtle way? For instance a horizontal gradient animation on the progressbar instead of the stripes?

(Not trying to belittle your work, just throwing ideas around)

I still don't like the inset for the menubar (event if the last one is better than the previous versions). Some people argues it's useful to distinguish the menubar more easily. I'd say ok but not is this way definitely ! It is the only part of the theme I don't like, especially with wm themes that use unfocused frame colour similar the the gtk base color.
