Description:

Clearlooks is new modern looking engine, based on Bluecurve. It has the looks of various themes blended together, resulting in a theme that's easy on the eyes and visually pleasing ;)

The difference with pixmap based themes, is that it does not sacrifice a lot of speed.

Since it's an engine, the installation differs from a 'normal' theme. Just run "./configure --prefix=/usr && make install" and you should be set.

Note: make sure that ~/.gtkrc-2.0 is not overriding a theme, as it has priority over the theme managers.

When updating from a previous version of Clearlooks keep in mind that applications still running will continue to use the old version of the engine. Switching themes may cause incompatibilities with the new theme definition. Those applications will then revert to the default GTK look. When this happens you will have to restart those applications. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Now, drool at the screenshots, and enjoy using it :)

!!!!!!!!!!!! NOTE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As of version 0.4, there is an optional animated progressbar. It has to be enabled manually by the brave. To do this, install it with "./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-animation" followed by "make install" as root.

GTK+ developers consider this new feature a horrible hack. But it's cool! We've tested it quite well, and it doesn't break anything we know of. If an application crashes, make sure that Clearlooks isn't the cause. If it is, please notify me.

!!!!!!!!!! ANOTHER NOTE !!!!!!!!

Clearlooks has a mailinglist. If you have a question, please send it there. The address is:

But it's not pixmap based! :D

You probably thought so because I said "unlike _other_ pixmap based" but that's not what I meant. It's a pure C based engine, based on the Bluecurve code, and thus quite fast :)

Thank you for liking it!

Sorry no, I'm using XFCE 4.2rc3, with the Tyrex theme. I can strongly recommend it though!

 A couple things

First, great engine! GTK+ really needs more good engines like this. Second, I found one bug, in the GNOME theme manager when I open the "Theme Details", the scrollbar's trough is drawn down past the end of the scrollbar (as in, crosses the text label below it). And actually, while I'm posting, one other thing, would it be possible for the menu items to be more customizable? I'm not a big fan of Bluecurve's menu hilight style. Anyway, thanks for a really nice engine, I look forward to future releases.

First of all, thank you for your comment! I just had a look at the gnome-theme-manager, but the scrollbar through does not cross the text. Now, this might be a difference in GTK+ version. Which version of GTK+ 2 are you using?

Even though I can't reproduce the issue, I still have an idea how I could fix it. But if I can reproduce it with the same version of GTK+ you have, it'll be easier to fix :)

Also, which distribution are you using? It might be that some distro-specific patches are doing nasty things...

Now, about the menu highlight... Making it customizable is certainly possible. At least, choosing between two (or more) different styles is. If you could give me some ideas about a highlight style that would look nice, I'll be willing to try to implement it :)

For GTK+ version, I'm using 2.4.14 from Debian sid. And with regards to menu hilight styles, I'd love for the menu hilight to be drawn the way the buttons are. Other than that, a "flat" menu hilight (bordered, like Mist) would be nice too.

put this;

GtkWidget::focus-line-width = 2
GtkWidget::focus-line-pattern = ""
GtkWidget::interior_focus = 0
GtkWidget::focus_padding = 0
GtkMenuItem::selected_shadow_type = in

in;
style "clearlooks-menu-item" = "clearlooks-default"
