 I hate Unity...

I use the classic gnome desktop instead.
I moved to Ubuntu only few months ago to run special software for my work developed and running on Linux. I was happy and learning quickly to use and appreciate Ubuntu Maverick... thinking that 11.04 was an important release and that I should make the move... I installed it!
The system is fine by itself, there are some improvement... but GOD I dislike the Unity interface! What did Canonical think? I do not want nor need a smartphone interface! I have dual display! The Unity bar is difficult to customize after some debian package are install I had trouble to add the link, etc.. It's wasting space!
I hate the fact that the menu of each application appears in the top bar instead of each applications windows, it's confusing when you switch a lot between application!!
GLAD I could get RID of the Unity interface and go back to Gnome classic desktop!
I hope that for the next release of Ubuntu they will stick to classic desktop!

I left GNOME over a year ago and switched to Xfce for 2 reasons: 1) I saw a glimpse of GNOME 3 back then and didn't like what I saw at all, and 2) I got to where I had it up to HERE with the attitudes of a few certain people on GNOME-Look (I'm posting this from Xfce-Look, BTW).

From what I've read about Unity...well, I have to wonder just what Shuttleworth was smoking when he decided to switch to the Unity interface. Personally, I believe that with that move, Ubuntu has sowed the seeds of their own demise and is rapidly turning into a has-been in the Linux world. I could be wrong, of course, but I'm convinced that Unity won't fly with the community.

In all honesty, I think Ubuntu would do WAY better to instead switch to Xfce as its default desktop and discontinue Xubuntu, as that would be a redundancy. While Xfce doesn't quite do everything that the GNOME 2.x desktop can do, it can do most of it, plus Xfce has a few things it can do that GNOME 2.x can't either, making Xfce kind of a "GNOME Lite" or "GNOME Junior", if you will. Personally, I think there will be a bit of a popularity increase for Xfce from disenchanted GNOME users.

Granted, Xubuntu has historically been a bit bloated, which has hurt Xfce's reputation of being a lightweight desktop. I use Crunchbang Xfce edition, and it's about as light as their Openbox version, which proves that Xfce in and of itself IS nice and lightweight. But Xubuntu has, IMHO, always been an excellent OS, even if it is a bit bloated compared to most if not all other distros that use Xfce.

Having spent more quality time with Unity, I have to revise my earlier evaluation.

It Stinks.

Plain and simple.

WARNING:

Stinging indictment of Unity and the general future of Ubuntu to follow.

This is Shuttleworth's ego driving a great product (Ubuntu) into the ground. The interface is poorly designed, buggy, untested Alpha code and even the underlying OS could use a de-lousing of sorts. How anyone in their wildest dreams could consider inflicting this disaster on a user base is beyond comprehension. Well, not really: Apple had Leopard and Microsoft had Vista.

Removing Unity reduces one to a half-baked non-Unity half-Gnome mess with no 3D capabilities.

Having to TYPE AN APPLICATION'S NAME TO RUN IT is ridiculous - on a good day.

Pathetic nVidia support exists where 10.10 was fine.

Unless Unity undergoes a complete re-think and re-design, I'm off Ubuntu. I just downloaded Mint and put it on my wife's old dual core home theatre multimedia laptop and it was a breath of fresh air. This is being typed on my Meerkat box (my server is Lynx LTS) and unless something changes radically by next April (Meerkat's best-before date), I'm off Ubuntu and headed for Mint. THOSE folks seem to still have a grip on what a consumer desktop version is supposed to be.

I've been involved in desktop operating systems for 20 years (my other box is Win 7 x64 on the same hardware as my Ubuntu box: an AMD 965 Quad Core with 8Gb / 2 1Tb drives and ATI 5000 series cards) and I've been massively pleased with Meerkat.

11.04 in contrast is a huge slap in the face.

Hey guys,
I think one think missing is the awareness that the gnome developers are actually responsible for Unity development in that they are , in a sense, forcing people to gnome3 instead of having original gnome continue on and gnome3 , renamed, as an alternative.
I think Unity is the response to that, instead of using mutter as gnome3 does, compiz is used in it's place,
I dont know that shuttleworth has any choice in the matter. It was either move to gnome3 or use Unity.
personally I believe this netbook interface is only a "fad" a short lived approach to interfaces,, and will die out, leaving both gnome and ubuntu in a bad position,,,
