Description:

VERSION 1.4.1
It has come to my attention that some older versions of the pixmap engine (like the one found in Ubuntu Lucid Lynx) have a bug that causes severe visual glitches when transparency is used in menubars. If your menubars and panel indicators are messed up, go to the Fixes page of the Orta Settings Manager and check the option "Select this if your menus and panel have visual glitches". This will also remove transparency from the Gnome Menu Bar applet, so if you use this applet with the flat panel option to make the panel transparent, you are out of luck.

INSTALLATION :

Ubuntu PPA :

Please make absolutely sure you have removed any previous instances of the theme before installing via ppa.

To add the ppa and install the theme and the settings manager, type this on a terminal :

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nikount/orta-desktop
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install orta-theme

To install the emerald decorators :

sudo apt-get install orta-emerald-decorators

To install the Xfwm4 decorators :

sudo apt-get install orta-xfwm4-decorators

You can find the Orta Settings Manager under the Preferences category of your Main Menu.

Manual Installation :

Extract the extractme.tar.gz archive that you find inside the zip, to a folder of your choosing. Inside, you will find the theme (Orta.tar.gz) and additional decorators (Orta-Squared.tar.gz and Orta-Old.tar.gz) along with some folders. First, right click on OrtaSettingsManager.py and make sure that the "Allow executing file as program" option is checked. Run it and press the uninstall button to remove any old versions of Orta from your system. You can install the theme and decorators manually by dragging and dropping them to the Gnome Appearance Preferences window, or you can use the installer on the Orta Settings Manager (recommended if you want to install for all users including root). Now you can go through the various tabs of the Settings Manager and setup the theme according to your preferences. When you are done click the save button. Make sure you select another theme on the Appearance Preferences dialog that pops up, and then go back to Orta in order to apply your changes.

Leave the orta folder alone, it includes the Orta Settings Manager files .

Inside the Chromium folder, you will find a Chromium theme and different sizes of scrollbars to install.

Inside the Awn folder you will find an Avant Window Navigator lucido style. There are also 5 emerald themes inside the emerald folder.

LICENCE :

The pixmaps are licensed under the Creative Commons non commercial share alike license, and the code under GPL v3. I've also included the original xcf sources of the pixmaps so that anyone can easily modify the theme to his/hers preferences.

Changelog:

Fixes:

- Synaptic fix for gtk2-engines-pixbuf version 2.20 and older.

- Main menu icon size reverted to 22.

Don't know for now, but IMO somehow something is missing there.
Those buttons kind of don't match the whole composition.
Of course it's only MO, don't get it as a "-"
May be you can surprise us in the next release.:)

That's weird... I used the exact same shadowing and roundness i use throughout the theme. Still, if i get any interesting ideas, i will included them in the theme.

I think that with dark panel version the menus feels better with dark background (as in elementary-dark),what do you think?:)

 Running as root.

It's extremely imprudent to trust a theme maker to install a theme as root. I had to install it manually.

Please provide drag-and-drop packages for gnome-appearance-properties, it's not that hard. Do not encourage linux newbies to run anything and everything as root. We're supposed to be better at security than Windows users.

You are right but there are more ways to see this. Personally i tend to agree to your way, but i also try to respect the requests of my users, newbies or otherwise.

The thing is that most newbies as you say don't know why synaptic or any other app that runs with su privileges doesn't use the theme, so i got allot of complaints, thus i decided to make it install for all users.

Now, about security:

- The installer is written in python intentionally so anyone can read the code.

- Most users nowadays install allot of things (including themes) through external repositories. root privileges again, but this time we are talking about binaries.

- You CAN install the theme by copying and pasting it inside ~/.themes , nobody is forcing you to use the installer.

Still, because the root thing bugged me as well, i've already rewritten the installer to allow the user to choose to install locally (no root access needed) or to install for all users. This will land probably latter today.

As much as i agree with you, i think Linux isn't just about security, it's also about choice, so i think this is the best compromise.

Thanks for taking the time to express your views :)

Thank you for listening. I think a non-root installer would be great. :)

It's as rounded as the rest (roundness of 4), the color and the shadows just hide that fact :)

Sorry, i thought you meant the scrollbar, i am kind of tired today (extended lack of sleep). The progressbars aren't rounded because the pixmap engine has a redraw bug with transparent progressbars. I needed transparency to make them round due to the gradients and to make the theme color configurable by the user. I also tried using murrine scrollbars but i couldn't get the shadowing to match the rest of the theme.

Still absorbing the structure, good work on the transparencies (surfaces) neutral gradients leaving the pixmap theme re colorable v nice.

It has gotten so big that even i get lost when i am editing it. I have to make the code more modular in the feature, it will make it easier to follow and speed up the theme too.
