It has come to my attention that some older versions of the pixmap engine (like the one found in Ubuntu Lucid Lynx) have a bug that causes severe visual glitches when transparency is used in menubars. If your menubars and panel indicators are messed up, go to the Fixes page of the Orta Settings Manager and check the option "Select this if your menus and panel have visual glitches". This will also remove transparency from the Gnome Menu Bar applet, so if you use this applet with the flat panel option to make the panel transparent, you are out of luck.

INSTALLATION :

Ubuntu PPA :

Please make absolutely sure you have removed any previous instances of the theme before installing via ppa.

To add the ppa and install the theme and the settings manager, type this on a terminal :

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nikount/orta-desktop
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install orta-theme

To install the emerald decorators :

sudo apt-get install orta-emerald-decorators

To install the Xfwm4 decorators :

sudo apt-get install orta-xfwm4-decorators

You can find the Orta Settings Manager under the Preferences category of your Main Menu.

Manual Installation :

Extract the extractme.tar.gz archive that you find inside the zip, to a folder of your choosing. Inside, you will find the theme (Orta.tar.gz) and additional decorators (Orta-Squared.tar.gz and Orta-Old.tar.gz) along with some folders. First, right click on OrtaSettingsManager.py and make sure that the "Allow executing file as program" option is checked. Run it and press the uninstall button to remove any old versions of Orta from your system. You can install the theme and decorators manually by dragging and dropping them to the Gnome Appearance Preferences window, or you can use the installer on the Orta Settings Manager (recommended if you want to install for all users including root). Now you can go through the various tabs of the Settings Manager and setup the theme according to your preferences. When you are done click the save button. Make sure you select another theme on the Appearance Preferences dialog that pops up, and then go back to Orta in order to apply your changes.

Leave the orta folder alone, it includes the Orta Settings Manager files .

Inside the Chromium folder, you will find a Chromium theme and different sizes of scrollbars to install.

Inside the Awn folder you will find an Avant Window Navigator lucido style. There are also 5 emerald themes inside the emerald folder.

LICENCE :

The pixmaps are licensed under the Creative Commons non commercial share alike license, and the code under GPL v3. I've also included the original xcf sources of the pixmaps so that anyone can easily modify the theme to his/hers preferences.

Not only did your incredible theme make me convert instantly from elementary GTK (didn't thought that was even possible), it also keeps getting more and more awesome with every release!

I just received the recent update (1.2) via PPA and I am really glad to see that you managed to fix the panel app "button" glitch! Just nitpicking, but having the Show Desktop app higher than my other Faenza-Icons really bugged me. ;)

Seriously, fantastic job you're doing on this theme - keep the good work coming! :D

Thanks :). As for keeping it up, i don't think i will add any more new futures (the theme is already on the verge of becoming unmanageable due to complexity), but i will keep updating with bug fixes.

Do you like the new expanders btw?

I can only imagine what you mean, since I've never created a GTK theme myself. I spent some time heavily modding existing ones, though, and almost went insane over this mess of one huge workaround which GTK2 has become. ^^

Thats why I'm so incredibly thankful for the configuration tool Orta comes with!

You nailed it, thanks. Works great on both my Arch and Sid desktops. No new features needed. I love the flexibility of the theme. One of the best gnome themes I've ever used.

I love the theme and all of my ubuntu machines are using it. Is it possible to add an option for 'invert' color of 'checked' check box and 'selected' radio button? Just like this theme "http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Flow?content=124681"... thanks!

Thanks for solving the extra panel issue, now looks pretty well! Now i'm trying to put a dark color in the active tab of pidgin when the dark tabs are displayed. I tried with this in the dark tab rc file:

fg[NORMAL] = "#000000"
fg[PRELIGHT] = "#000000"
fg[SELECTED] = "#000000"
fg[INSENSITIVE] = "#000000"

It doesn't works for pidgin (but it do with another tabs), i'm sure i'm doing something wrong but i don't know where.

Can you help with that?

You can't fix the pidgin tab color issue by editing the gtkrc, it's a known bug with the application itself. Both normal and active tabs use the same color for labels, so you will either end up with active tabs with white colored text, or inactive tabs with dark colored text (depending on your color choice). There is an old ticket on their bug tracker here :

there is also a recent bug report on Launchpad :

The only way to solve this is by making a patch for the application itself.

When I use wingpanel, the text is very hard to read as it is too dark. See here:

However, the text is fine if I select Ambiance. Is there some in a gtkrc I can change to make it easier to read?

Wingpanel isn't even in alpha state yet and it doesn't support gtk themes. I could try cooking a workaround but the latest version doesn't work on my Natty box. When it does, i will look more into it. Btw, by looking at the code, setting the panel to dark in the Orta Settings Manager might fix the text color.

Hi, a really beautiful theme! I'm having a little problem with the language selector in the indicator applet: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1507406/panel.png As you see, all other applets have a white font color, just the one language switcher is quite unreadable...

Thanks for your reply! I'm using Arch Linux, the dark Orta panel, the default window gradient, light round menu and no fixes enabled (but the problem seems to appear independently of the Orta setting).

Btw, I'd prefer to use the light panel (where this problem doesn't appear), but it has another problem: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1507406/panel-light.png (compare with the dark panel screenshot: the system monitor has a huge border here).

Hmm, really strange. I'll test it on some Ubuntu machines. There is an inofficial Arch Linux LiveCD from August 2010: http://godane.wordpress.com/2010/08/25/archiso-live-20100825-release/ But it is running XFCE so you'd need to install Gnome in the LiveCD session... Maybe I can do some testing here? I'll also try it with a clean user (since my home directory is several years old :)).

I've done some testing: On the Ubuntu machines both bugs don't appear. With a clean user on Arch they do appear (which is clear since the Orta theme is installed for all users).

Concerning the language switcher problem: Ubuntu is using its own language switcher inside the indicator applet whereas Arch is using the standard Gnome language switcher. So for investigating this problem it should be enough to take any LiveCD distro using the standard Gnome systray applet.

I did test it with Debian squeeze in the past and i didn't encounter this but i may have done something in the newer versions that causes it. I will look into it, but it might take a week before i do as i am otherwise occupied right now.
