Description:

VERSION 1.4.1
It has come to my attention that some older versions of the pixmap engine (like the one found in Ubuntu Lucid Lynx) have a bug that causes severe visual glitches when transparency is used in menubars. If your menubars and panel indicators are messed up, go to the Fixes page of the Orta Settings Manager and check the option "Select this if your menus and panel have visual glitches". This will also remove transparency from the Gnome Menu Bar applet, so if you use this applet with the flat panel option to make the panel transparent, you are out of luck.

INSTALLATION :

Ubuntu PPA :

Please make absolutely sure you have removed any previous instances of the theme before installing via ppa.

To add the ppa and install the theme and the settings manager, type this on a terminal :

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nikount/orta-desktop
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install orta-theme

To install the emerald decorators :

sudo apt-get install orta-emerald-decorators

To install the Xfwm4 decorators :

sudo apt-get install orta-xfwm4-decorators

You can find the Orta Settings Manager under the Preferences category of your Main Menu.

Manual Installation :

Extract the extractme.tar.gz archive that you find inside the zip, to a folder of your choosing. Inside, you will find the theme (Orta.tar.gz) and additional decorators (Orta-Squared.tar.gz and Orta-Old.tar.gz) along with some folders. First, right click on OrtaSettingsManager.py and make sure that the "Allow executing file as program" option is checked. Run it and press the uninstall button to remove any old versions of Orta from your system. You can install the theme and decorators manually by dragging and dropping them to the Gnome Appearance Preferences window, or you can use the installer on the Orta Settings Manager (recommended if you want to install for all users including root). Now you can go through the various tabs of the Settings Manager and setup the theme according to your preferences. When you are done click the save button. Make sure you select another theme on the Appearance Preferences dialog that pops up, and then go back to Orta in order to apply your changes.

Leave the orta folder alone, it includes the Orta Settings Manager files .

Inside the Chromium folder, you will find a Chromium theme and different sizes of scrollbars to install.

Inside the Awn folder you will find an Avant Window Navigator lucido style. There are also 5 emerald themes inside the emerald folder.

LICENCE :

The pixmaps are licensed under the Creative Commons non commercial share alike license, and the code under GPL v3. I've also included the original xcf sources of the pixmaps so that anyone can easily modify the theme to his/hers preferences.

Changelog:

Fixes:

- Synaptic fix for gtk2-engines-pixbuf version 2.20 and older.

- Main menu icon size reverted to 22.

 Nautilus Mode-button small bug

There is a small bug with mode-button borders which are not well defined...I hope you can see that from the screenshot:

I am aware of it and it's not exactly a bug. You see, the mode buttons don't have a transparent background, so in order to blend with the background gradient i had to add one myself. I just added a background for nautilus without a menubar (hide the menubar and you will see what i am talking about). My next update will support both cases.

I take the opportunity here to report another bug (really this time) with the opera browser menu, take a look at the screenshot:

Omg, this looks hideous :P. It will be hard to fix too, as Opera isn't a gtk app. I might need to make a skin for it...

Crap, it's a redraw bug with opera 11, the menu is a transparent gradient and opera draws it again and again, creating this visual anomaly. I can only fix it by making the gradient non transparent, which will prevent anyone from tweaking the menu color :/. I will probably include an option for it in the next release, but you should submit a bug report to opera as this is clearly a bug with their app.

This theme is pretty nice. I like it very much by the screenshot. However, it is out of function at my computer. I use ubuntu 9.10. Would you please to tell me the version of theme engine you use? Thanks.

 Great theme, but some issues

Thanks for creating such a "Softest & Smoothest" theme ever... :-) I used to change themes twice or thrice a day, but this theme is decorating my desktop since I've found it (via WebUpd8.org).

But I've noticed a weird thing, when I switch to Orta from any other theme, appearance changes like normal, but sometimes entire Gnome UI turns into classic (Win 9x style) along with default Gnome icons & panels etc. However, things become normal again if I open Appearance Preferences, but that classic ugly look still persists with Nautilus and all I can do is to restart nautilus to get things normal. Note that this trouble only happens if I switch from any other theme, otherwise every thing is fine without a hitch.

Can't wait for new version of Orta :-) (It is surely a killer for so-called elementary theme), it'd be great if you also provide dedicated Chrome theme to match with Orta.

Thank you for your kind words, i must say thought that Orta was never meant to replace Elementary. Elementary is stable, fast and works well with every app. Where DanRabbit chose usability over style with Elementary by using cairo engines, i did the opposite :P. Orta does allot of things that are bound to create problems with non-native gtk apps, like xul, qt and java swing apps.

As for the bug, i can't reproduce it, could you please provide me with more details, like distro, nautilus and gnome version ? Do you also have the latest murrine engine installed? I forgot to remove some code that wasn't really necessary anymore, which only works with newer versions of murrine, causing problems with the theme with older versions.

Next version will come in a week, and it will have a new panel, different tab styles and scrollbar sizes to choose from. It will also include support for both vanilla and elementary nautilus, along with allot of bug fixes.

As you required, here are the versions of software I'm running.

Ubuntu 10.10
Gnome 2.32.0
Kernel Linux 2.6.35-22-generic
Murrine 0.98.1.1-0ubuntu1

Hardware:
Acer Aspire 4930
2 GB RAM
Intel Core2Duo 2.0 GHz processor.

Note that I've installed Murrine from official Ubuntu repository rather than any PPA.

I agree that elementary is "now" stable & fast as it is at version 2.0. But, I still prefer to use Orta rather than elementary since I've not noticed any performance difference so far.

And yes, I've found another very little issue, while Orta applied and I tried to run any GTK app from Terminal, it showed me a warning regarding unexpected '}' (brace) in file 'scrollbar_10.rc' in Orta's gtk-2.0 directory. I looked throughout the file and actually found an extra brace at the end of the file, I removed it, and things are once again normal. I know, this thing will not make any difference but let's make it better ;-)

Orta is developing, and I expect to see it competing with other popular light themes. I'm also working to create some wallpapers that matches perfectly with Orta.

Hope this conversation helps you to find & fix issues. All the best...

Your problems are caused by the murrine engine, next version will only use murrine for tooltips, so it won't cause such issues.

I was aware of the extra brace but since it didn't affect the actual rendering of the theme (with it being at the end of the file) i didn't want to update the theme just for that.

I really appreciate contributions, and if you are serious about it we could design the new decorator together.

I'd love to contribute to make Orta better. Since, I have no prior experience in coding Gtk themes, I can work with design elements. Anyways, thanks for considering and taking time to reply.

Let's build it better... ;-)

Btw Orta already includes allot of fixes for Chromium. I've skinned every element whose appearance is not hardcoded, but tabs and scrollbars unfortunately are. If you want to see how chrome looks without the fixes, open the gtkrc file of the theme and put a # in front of the line :
include "Apps/chrome.rc"
save changes and restart Chromium.

I've tried using Gtk theme for chrome but as it used Faenza icons for Forward-Backward & refresh button, they appear smaller to point via mouse. I've also tried the option you suggested but they didn't make much difference.
