Description:

This is a nested tarball:

Over 6000 Downloads

This is the complete Gnome port of the Alienware Darkstar Theme made for Alienware by the Skin Factory. The Bluestar and Greenstar Themes are based on the Darkstar Theme and its mostly just color changes. The Theme Package Includes:

1.) 3 Gtk2 and Metacity themes
2.) 3 GnoMenu2 Themes (Menus and Buttons) **Install script must be edit to auto install**
3.) Dungeon Font
4.) 5 Background Wallpapers
5.) padster's colorful-alien xsplash (much better than mine)
6.) Screensaver
7.) Icons se-interface, (Red, Blue and Green) and LaGaDesk-BlueNight
8.) Background for Nautilus
9.) usplash
10.) cursor theme X-Alien2-Dark
11.) OpenOffice Splash Screen by tuxkernel (Added per his request)
12.) Gimp Splash Screen

Now Includes a install script set.

Many thanks to nale12 whose original dark_star theme (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Dark_Star?content=110767) provided the foundation that I built this theme on.

Much appreciation for jameshardy88 whose encouragement, assistance and friendship helped me do this. This is my very first Gtk2 theme and I had no idea what I was doing or how to do it when I started. He explained to me what I needed to do and how to go about it. He also proved to me (I really did already know this) that MS is a highly chaotic Cluster F*** where there is NO standardization of naming conventions for anything. His tweaking made the theme much better and made it look a lot more like it was supposed to. He redid the frames and borders and fixed the sliders. He also added a couple of elements I completely missed. Plus getting the buttons to look a whole lot better. jameshardy88 also fixed the issues with the Bluestar version as for some reason after I made the color changes the sliders, progress bars and buttons did not work correctly. He got them working again.

The font is dungeon and to use it simple copy (or move) the font to your .font hidden directory in your home folder. If it doesn't exist then simply make it. You will need to install the font for the menu to work correctly.

Using juan2000's ideas I also added 'Network Tools' and 'System Monitor' commands to the menu but opted not to add the network connection command since its a bit redundant being that it is accessible in the Notification Area of the Gnome Panel. Instead, I opted to add the run command.

There are four backgrounds, including the Original Alienware Darkstar background. All are original works (not by me) made for Alienware and are freely distributable.

OpenOffice Splash Screen by tuxkernel (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Alienware+Openoffice+Splash+Screen?content=119468)

The GnoMenu theme is designed for the bottom panel, though it can be used from the top, because the alien head graphics and wording is integrated into the menu design by the Skin Factory they will appear upside down if used from the top panel.

The Icon sets are Se-Interface by MrSkope (Damian Strain) and ported to Gnome by Naf71 (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Se-Interface-V2+%28Red%29?content=118022). The LaGaDesk Icons are by LaGaDesk (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/LaGaDesk-BlueNight?content=109343) The original Windows Icons for this theme are not available in PNG format. The creators of the Icons used a different type of file system unusable by anyone who does not have their program installed. This leaves Linux out completely in using the orignal Alienware Darkstar Icons.

The Sound files are two from the original Mandrake (Mandriva) Galaxy theme and if you have ever heard them before then you understand why I went and hunted them down for this theme. The rest are royalty free sounds I downloaded that worked well. I did not create a sound theme file and simply suggest you copy (I repeat COPY) the files in /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo, as root, to a backup folder then copy my included sound files into /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo, and over write the files with mine. Main reason is this will also replace the guady (and highly annoying) Ubuntu drum sound with a more pleasant female computer voice saying "Computer Ready"

The X11 cursor theme was originally made by JJ Ying (http://users.wincustomize.com/691873/) and coverted by KuduK (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/X-Alien2?content=117799)

Great theme but I found some missing files:

/usr/share/themes/Alien_Darkstar/gtk-2.0/menubar.rc:44: I can't found image file: "Menu-Menubar/menubar-item.png"
/usr/share/themes/Alien_Darkstar/gtk-2.0/menubar.rc:48: Background image options specified without filename
/usr/share/themes/Alien_Darkstar/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:821: I can't found image file: "Scrollbars/slider-ver/grip-horiz.png"
/usr/share/themes/Alien_Darkstar/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:824: Overlay image options specified without filename
/usr/share/themes/Alien_Darkstar/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:859: I can't found image file: "Scrollbars/slider-horiz-insens.png"
/usr/share/themes/Alien_Darkstar/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:867: Background image options specified without filename
/usr/share/themes/Alien_Darkstar/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:918: I can't found image file: "Scrollbars/slider-vert-insens.png"
/usr/share/themes/Alien_Darkstar/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:926: Background image options specified without filename

or usplash not working.

System: Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Hardy Heron

The usplash theme is for Karmic so it won't work on earlier versions. This is because the progress bar is no longer required by usplash but older versions still want it.

I'll look into those missing files. Thought we had them all fixed.

installing usplash theme...
Bareword found where operator expected at (eval 1) line 1, near "/usr/lib"
(Missing operator before lib?)
syntax error at (eval 1) line 1, near "/usr/lib"
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-26-generic
usplash theme installed successfully!!

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Hardy Heron.

Not sure why that comes up. The command in the script is correct and no error comes up if you run that command outside of the script. There is no operator before /usr/lib needed since that's the path to the file. I am trying to find it but usplash still installs correctly.

Great job maintaining, improving and adding to this theme. Its one of the most complete ones out there now and definitely seems to have picked up somewhat of a following, over 5,000 downloads in the time this has been available is an impressive feat!

 Maybe I'm a newb

but... how do i install this? Do I extract its contents before running the install.sh script? Or do I run this right from the tar.gz file. If so, how? I extracted the entire tarball, and ran the script from terminal. Every single item failed to find directories and such, but it said each time that every component installed correctly. What did I miss? I've never used scripts before, but I learn quick enough.

You need to unpack the archive and then run the install script. Be sure to read the the information about installation when running the script.

Forgot to mention the script is for Ubuntu Karmic Koala so if your running another distribution you may need to modify the script.

Lastly those errors are normal as its trying to make sure that older versions don't exist before it installs things and it looks in the two possible locations for them. So even if you do have the older versions installed the error notices will occur.

Alright, thank you very much for the help. I will be re-downloading the theme as soon as the file share site feels like working again. I had to un-Wubi and then re-Wubi Ubuntu tonight, due to some very strange GRUB issue that I didn't feel like dealing with. I will let post again when I have it all working.

Worked like a champ!! Very nice work. My only gripe is some of the text on certain buttons is too dark to see. Still the best looking theme I've ever seen.
