openDesktop.org launched

openDesktop.org launched

Today we launched openDesktop.org. openDesktop.org is the new head of our website network. It brings the contents and users of our websites together. Users and contributors of a free desktop can exchange applications and artwork, help each other, discuss new ideas and get to know other people. It shouldn´t be important which desktop environment you prefer, which linux distribution you use or if you are a developer, an artist or a different contributor. It´s only important that you help to push the free desktop.

We believe that together we can change the world and create a better desktop than the proprietary ones.

We also launched GTK-Apps.org and CLI-Apps.org to round off our website network.

 Other sites...?

It seems that this site snags content from qt-apps.org and kde-apps.org. I have a qt-apps.org account which seems to work here as well, now if I release a new version of my software, shall I publish it here (i.e. is it back-propagated to qt-apps.org) or at the original place?

Other than that... what is the reason of having another "XXX-apps.org" clone around? Tricking Google into raising the pagerank for each sites?

Thomas.

Hi,

all the contents from the subpages are automatically aggregated on openDesktop.org. So you don't need to upload your stuff again.

If you are don't care which toolkit you use or which desktop environment is best, you find everything you need on one website. openDesktop.org

This is not about Google. This is about more colaboration in the Free Software World.

"aggregated on opendesktop.org" means that it is not a good idea to publish stuff directly on opendesktop.org because it won't show up on qt-apps.org, right?

In general I'm perfectly with you, I'd really like to push free software on every user's desktop, but do you really think its a good idea to setup another "aggregator" site? I can only assume that there was no consense with the site owners of kde-apps.org, qt-apps.org and/or gtk-apps.org (oh man...) to create _one_ _outstanding_ site which hosts them all. Sure, content is more widespread by this, but I can clearly see advantages if all the different efforts (and work force) is bundled for _one_ _single_ platform...

The categories are shared between openDesktop.org and the subpages. It makes no difference if you upload you stuff to openDesktop.org or to, for example GTK-Apps.org.
The users can get you application from GTK-Apps.org, if they are looking for a GTK Application, or from openDesktop.org if they don't care.

 poor design

i think the application categories are poorly chosen. here are just two examples.

why is "Kommander Scripts" a category? do you think this is desktop agnostic? it looks to me like KDE-centric.

also, where is the category for non-PIM info management apps?

in gnomefiles.org there is a whole top-level category "Information Management". this includes PIM apps like Sunbird but also non-PIM apps like mcatalog for creating book and DVD collections.

on this site, an application like BasKet Note Pads is relegated in the "Utilities > Other" category. which is too obscure.

I wish to sort of disagree, I'm following multiple of your sites now and like the idea of a single site covering all software but think that service menus and kommander scripts should be included. Maybe in a d.e. specific subcatergory (remember kommander scripts will run under Gnome if the KDE libs are loaded)

 Got gambling?

Where are all the gambling ads that you have on your other sites?

While were on the subject, I'd suggest adding ads to all your sites for other vices like liquor, cigarettes and pr0n..

It all fits in with "freedom" don't ya think?

 kde-look?

So opendesktop.org aggregates all the content from all the sites you have links too? Or just some of them? Just wondering cause I've had my account for a while on kde-look, and now I just added an app on cli-apps, but only the latter appears on opendesktop.
