openDesktop.org is one of the biggest online communities, social networks and portals for the free desktop movement in the world where developers, artists and users can share applications, tools, wallpapers, sounds, icons, themes and other artwork and stuff for the open desktop.
Everyone in our network can down and upload artwork, applications, documents and other files.
Our main focus is on user generated content. Therefore, it is very important to us to provide social networking functionality to our users. Building friendships with other free software users or developers, creating groups with lively discussions, message functions and microblogging functions are just some of the possibilities.
It is important to note that openDesktop.org is the umbrella site summarizing the content of all the sites in the network. Oncluded in this networks are sites such as KDE-Look.org, KDE-Apps.org, GTK-Apps.org, GNOME-Look.org and many other similar sites. For the complete list of sites in the network, click on our FAQ. That´s why content uploaded by you on one of these sites, are also displayed on openDesktop.org.
Since the network is dedicated to the open source community membership is completely free and non-binding for everyone. In that way we support the open source community to continue growing. In our view, being well-connected is a critical precondition for reaching this goal. We also developed the Open Collaborative Services API to help reach more users and bring the Social Desktop into the mainstream.
Of course openDesktop.org generates a lot of traffic and demands hordes of server power. Together our sites generate more than 90 million page impressions per month and receive over 2,6 million unique visitors per month. Therefore, we rely on several income sources to finance the running costs. First of all there is advertising. Secondly there is our job board. It's open and free for everyone to post his or her job offer, or application. Premium features such as job naming in several million system emails and in the RSS feeds are offered to companies. That's another source of income. Additionally, we recently launched our Sponsoring project to acquire more vital resources. So, if you want to support us, please help us find sponsors.
