Linux is an OS

Promotion
Description:

Linux is an OS, when we say Linux, we mean the entire OS encluding whatever the distribution included by default. We refer to the Linux kernel as just that, or just the kernel.
This group is readable only to members. This is in response to the "Linux is a kernel" group disallowing comments from non-members. Since I can't figure out how to do that here (comment if you know how), I'll just make it unreadable.

Yes, it's starting to come "very funny". How long it takes for people to understand that OS isn't that all what is installed by default when they install some distribution?

Is that so damn hard to understand that OS is _somewhere between_ hardware and applications?!

Hardware | Operating System | Applications (Videoplayer, GNOME, KDE, Web-browser, GIMP)

If someone wants the car analogy: Operating System is like cars engine, it's not the car. And kernel is just a small piece on that engine to make it work. And what ever you add to car, was it car-stereo, game console, GPS or a trailer, those are not part of OS but part of system. You need the damn OS to use your applications and hardware, without OS, you have only applications what you cant run. Without applications, you only have OS and you dont do nothing with that.

Even that Linux is just a kernel. It's synonym for bigger things, it means kernel, OS, system, Open Source and even a whole nerd life. How long it takes to you guys understand that some people talks by technical terms and most people talks using marketing bul*it.

You cant talk about GNU/Linux if you try to understand with information what you have got from Microsoft WIndows. There is big difference and that's why Windows and GNU/Linux are different OS's. Microsoft has integrated almost everything to OS, so those are part of the OS. GNU/Linux is open and very modular and most distributions just bundle applications WITH OS and even applications like Firefox and Amarok comes with OS, they ain't part of OS like Internet Explorer or Windows Mediaplayer are part of Windows OS.

It's like Apples and Oranges fighting wich one is best banana!

I understand all that perfectly. Really I do.
The whole issue is not getting things confused with other things, the whole issue is choosing names and definitions. Common usage should define and name.
Linux, by common usage, means the OS.
The kernel, or the Linux kernel, by common usage means just that. No-one ever says Linux when they mean the kernel. Even its website proves my point: kernel.org
GNU/Linux, by common usage, means the OS while insisting on freedom and open source and promoting the FSF and GNU by preaching it as loudly as possibly. Oh, and please remember to pronounce the slash, because it's SO important.
Ironically, it's the die-hard preachy freedom fanatics who complained when Mozilla didn't allow people to take their product, modify it and name whatever they wanted, resulting in IceWeasel. I want to name the OS, Linux, and so do the vast majority of people based on common usage.
Doubly ironically, even the FSF is beginning to abandon GNU/Linux for just as ugly GNU OS.
The reality is, when people say Linux, they mean the OS, and they don't want to change its name, and neither do members of this group.
I hope you won't take this badly, just like I didn't take it badly everytime some-one insisted on the name GNU/Linux. So far, the only way I've protested is in making this group.

But "Linux" isnt an OS, dummy. Its a kernel. Distributions of GNU/Linux aren't operating systems either. They are distributions of GNU/Linux with the distribution developers choice of GNU apps wrapped around the linux kernel. The distribution developers 99% of the time dont even maintain these apps. duuuuuuuh.

Actually, just the kernel itself would qualify as an Operating System. You could boot the Linux Kernel alone and it would be enough to run simple applications. It is done in so many recovery and maintenance CD's it is not even funny...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system

People need to chill out... it's not a life or death matter... Unless you're Richard Stallman, why would you get so worked up about people not saying GNU? It sounds stupid anyway :P

Should I pronounce GNU:

* Gee - In -- You
* Ga-neew
* New

Also, sometimes after having nightmares of DOS 3.3 I have a whole day of saying GNU *backslash* Linux...is this a problem I can solve with the man pages or should I see a shrink.

One more question that can only be solved with social networking: Is it Lynn Ucks or Line Ucks?

I get so confused...Sometimes I just refer to my whole mess as Unix and overlook the fact that it is only a clone...;)

Even Linus himself will tell you Linux is just a kernel. Good grief this group is stupid.

You are wrong, Linus itselfs said that you should not try to categorise Linux to be just a kernel. It means more than just a kernel.

It's same as that you should not try to categorise any distribution as different OS than other distributions.

p.s Those who use personal attacks against other persons, are just those words what they use from subject who they are referring.

So I suggest that "flipflop" insult stops right there because you are talking about yourself, and I dont think you like to be treated like that, dont you?

that would be awesome, if the gentoo team would get off their asses and come out with a realease already instead of depending on their user community to pick up their slack and come out with an updated iso.

No one should really give a damn about releases in Gentoo. If your LiveCD doesn't work with your computer's hardware, there are plenty of other LiveCD's that will.

I am pretty sure I've stated this before but pretend I am speaking real slow so you can all understand.

Linux is a kernel with GNU applications wrapped around it. Otherwise it wouldnt need to be called GNU/Linux. If you do your history homework, you would learn that Richard "the flip flop wearing hippy tree hugger" Stallman couldn't (and still can't) get his HURD kernel to work correctly after what...a decade and a half? The linux kernel just so happened to work with GNUs applications.
Linux is no more than a kernel.

It damn sure doesn't run on ubuntu!
Oh yeah, and Linux is a kernel, not an OS
Someone shut BING down! It's a real POS.
