I'd be interested in something like
conky as a plasmoid, like if it would
be possible to dock the conky window to
be a plasmoid??

since I have searched high and low to
find some widget that was as powerful
and display a lot of info without taking
up much screen space... so far, the
absolutely best one is conky... conky
however doesn't like kde4 that much :)

Doesn't anybody use conky anymore??

so I thought if there would be a way
of getting it to be dockd in a plasmoid
somehow it would be a good way to
have conky without much hustle
in kde4 :)

I managed to get conky working nicely on my KDE 4.2 desktop.

Set these in .conkyrc:
own_window yes
own_window_transparent yes

...and start conky using a shell script which runs something like this beforehand to set the root window for conky's pseudo-transparency:
display -size 1280x1024 -window root /usr/kde/4.2/share/wallpapers/Blue_Curl/contents/images/1280x1024.jpg

...and then, finally, use the Window-specific behaviour control panel to set conky's window as:
Desktop: Force All Desktops
Keep below: Force on
No border: Force on
Skip taskbar: Force on
Skip pager: Force on
Accept focus: Force off
Closeable: Force off

You can still move it around using Alt+LeftClick if you need to and the only gotcha I've encountered is that Present Windows shows it. (That's been patched already and the fix should be in 4.2.1)

Yeah thanks!

That's one way to do it, I use feh...

but thats exactly my point... you have to do something
extra to get it working... not just run conky like in
for example in gnome.

plus it would be nice to have it in a plasmoid window
as it would integrate better with other plasmoids,
like for example the analog clock, if I use the analog
clock on my desktop and then put conky there,
conky looks out of place.

I dunno, maybe it's just me but I personally think
conky is the best sysmonitor there is and I really
would like to use it amongs plasmoids on my
desktop :)

 My first step into widgets

For the last two weeks I have been thinking of getting involved with the community and cranking some widgets =D this is exactly the group I needed.

I have done development work in java and C but pure backend stuff.

This would be my first time with UI work.

The first question I have is, how to begin?

If my platform is going to be GNOME should I use the screenlet framework or develop widgets using QT?

Any thoughts?

Hi,
how to begin... let me think.
Ok, you can have a look on some simple widgets, for example QLed and play with it.
Regarding documentation, you can look on qtsoftware website and read the online API reference docs
