Envied Ubuntu Group
Description:

Envied Ubuntu Group

Ubuntu:We all love it
Fast, stable, accessible, free. It is described and recognized as the best Linux distribution.
This group was created for all those people who appreciate this great Linux distro and want to support the Ubuntu community as possible with their own creations and participation.
You can participate in this project in many different way:by making a custom gtk2 theme, writing a script(which install a special piece of software/solves a particular problem), compile custom application, etc.

The Motos are simple:
''Ubuntu:Always the best choice''
''The staff made it, the community will support it''
''Ubuntu is Envied:The only thing it can be''

Group objectives:
As already said, this group aims to make Ubuntu remain the most ''envied'' distribution.
So objectives to be reached are the following:
-Fix the multimedia leak of the standard installation
-Create custom gtk themes and icons
-Create script to install/unlock custom options
-Give support to the community with problem-solving solutions and artworks(Better support for new users)

We are not going to reinvent Ubuntu. We just support it.

If you think you can do something better/easier or even time saving, this is the right group to join to.

 Win2-7 Pack

Im not sure how good I am at Linux tech support or programming....

But I do want to promote Ubuntu, and I do to all my customers and have gotten a few to switch and they ahve been very happy.

Im working with a small team to develop the Win2-7 Pack. It can help more people switch to Ubuntu because it makes it look more familiar. A vital resource! Were going to work on one for people that uare used to Mac. (Also Win2-7 will have 10.10 support when its released).

I've participated in a project like this something like 2 years ago.
What the current project status?

Well the current Project Status is: ON FIRE!!!! =^.^= Its going really well. Our next version (6.0) should be out this week with a few new graphics and a better installer and support for more distrobutions, but Ubuntu 10.4 is currently our Flagship Distro (Includes all features)

But there is one thing that Im having issues with that I cant figure out.

I run this command to set the ~/Desktop Icon to a custom icon from the script:

gvfs-set-attribute -t string ~/Desktop metadata::custom-icon file:$HOME/.icons/Win2-7/filesystems/folder-desktop.png

Problem is...when they uninstall the pack im not sure what command reverts it back to the statndard icon? :(

With 122,000+ downloads im expecting a lot of those downloads to be new Ubuntu users. :) We may work on other Themes, like Mac, Vista and XP....

If this is the only problem, maybe I can help you

So think about it:
If we consider that the command
gvfs-set-attribute -t string ~/Desktop metadata::custom-icon file:$HOME/.icons/Win2-7/filesystems/folder-desktop.png

sets the Win7 desktop icon and that the default ubuntu theme is humanity,

then the following command should revert it to default

gvfs-set-attribute -t string ~/Desktop metadata::custom-icon file:$/usr/share/icons/Humanity/places/desktop.svg

This solution should work at least on ubuntu.

Another suggestion:It would not be a bad idea to include the command above into the theme installation script or to prepare an ''Unistallation script'', just o make user users will not have any problem.

There are many different way to solve the problem. Just tell me what do you want to do, and I'll be happy to help you:)

Thanks for the help but that still don't solve it...

All that does is reassign the default theme Icon, when they change themes to say something else like Clearlooks, it maintains the humanity icon.

We need to figure out how to "remove" the custom icon attribute, but I cant seem to find out "what" configuration file that command changes to wipe it out....

We need to find another solution...

Use 5.9.1. Install it and then Uninstall it and look at the ~/Desktop Icon and youll see what I mean.

I Created a new account and tested the product:

Things I liked:
-Great and Accessible gui
-It is really similar to the win7

Things that (in my opinion) Should be fixed
-The menu is not gnomenu, but the default gnome menu.It should be substituted with gnomenu and and a win7 gnome theme should be selected by default.
-The Internet Explorer icon on Firefox. Please, don't do it.It's Firefox not the Hated IE.If you agree, I would like to participate in your project by writing a script which install the original IE6 or IE7(I've made this so many times, and can make a really good emulation)

General rating: from 1 to 10:Mark is 8.
You've done a great work, but you the project still needs some fixes.

I will try to solve the problem of that icon.

If you are interested in my participation, here I am.:)

Thanks for trying it out. Feel free to vote and become a fan if you want. This will really help Ubuntu and other Linux users! :)

As for your suggestions, I think we will just leave it as Mozilla Icon, we have recived many complaints about this but havent really gotten around to fixing it. It should be fixed in 6.0.

As for Gnoemnu, Its a little harder. Last time I played with trying to get it to auto add like DockBarX it didnt work quite right, for one thing when it loads it re-initializes and overwrites any theme information I preset and some times it crashed trying to auto add...Ill play with it again sometime soon but Its unlikely to auto add and configure.

That would be great if you could make a IE script. Do you need Wine to make it work? Tell me a lil more about it...

Also we "do" have a second issue on Ubuntu 10.4 involving Elementary Desktop.

You install Elementary Desktop with these commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:elementaryart/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Problem is...How do you "downgrade" back to the original nautilus...

Or is there another way to install it that can be rolled back?

ubuntu rox. i love it. i have tried almost 15 linux distro's and so far ubuntu is the one in which everything I intend to do worx. Dont listen to those people that say that ubuntu is a noob distro. they are just a bunch of idiots who have a minimalistic distro and are too afraid to lose all their work. Unless, if they actually have an extremely weak computer. in that case i can understand.

In facts you're right.
Ubuntu is the most widely used, the most user-friendly distro and probably the most compatible with other OS.

I agree with it.
I've tried
Suse-To complicated because of yast

Opensuse-Same problem as for suse, but tih some extra stability problems

Redhat-Know as one of the first and best ditro.Too unstable and not userfriendly.

Fedora-The succesor of redhat, it has all the last features and tecnologies.Quite Unstable and incomplete.

Mint-Desktop similar to Ubuntu(based on it).If we don't consider the mintmenu and the mintupdate(which are respectively a great menu and a great updater), we can say it is not a great distro because it has tons od unecessary apps.

Debian:The most stable distro I've ever tried. The only problem is that it sacrifice up-to-date software to be so stable.

Why Ubuntu?
-Easy to use
-Stable and Up-do-date software
-Great Community and staff support
It has only one defect: You need to configure the desktop at least one time(great time waste, by installing and configuring the desktop), then you can take advantage of everything it offers(That's why I founded orioginaly this group:To make the post-install configuration and installation easier(exstra components=.

true, but still, you need to do that with every other distro as well. although, i will try making a post-installation script in my free time. although, most people just need to install ubuntu-restricted-extras, which installs all the mp3 codecs and flashplayer. although, compared to other linux distros, ubuntu still needs a lot less tweaking, except for sabayon (but thats too bloated).

I have already prepared a multimedia script for Ubuntu.

Now I'm preparing it's successor(the next version).

I'm going to prepare an office suite too.
DO you know what apps should I include in it?

Good News. While Im waiting on Jesus to finnsh the icons for the Win2-7 Pack, i kinda got started on another project.

I basicly started making a series of extreamly easy to use scripts (Mostly Nautilus scripts) that allow users to easily and stablly encrypt and decrypt there files and folders. so far it comes in GPG and im working on OpenSSL edition.

Sea-horse works ok but is kinda tricky to use and forget useing the command line for new users.

If those go well i may develp scripts to easily create keys and create and varify signatues. :)

Well see. Ill dedicate the project to the group and have a link. :D
