GTK Theme Maker

Description:

This is a group for the development of GTK Theme Maker.
http://opendesktop.org/content/show.php?content=144321

Help is needed for UI design, coding, and testing.

I'm not so sure about importing gtk files, though. Even though GTK 3 uses CSS, there is still the problem of getting the individual values so a GUI editor can be made. Right now the program only has a text editor pane so you can see the results as you edit.

I am using Python and releasing the program under the GPL.

 Good Idea but...

There really is no need to reinvent the wheel. The widget factory is a very capable display, it just needs a little love. Gnome color chooser can let you customize basic properties, although it is limited. And Cimi has a link for a murrine customizer gui somewhere on his site, again needs love last I saw it. The point is any of those projects are looking for someone to love them, they have a solid base that actually works. I for one would love to see a twf thats been updated with new widgets, can handle on the fly editing graphically or by coding the GTKRC directly. Sadly a coder I am not. I wish you luck even if you create something that can just preview changes on the fly it would be a godsend to many.

Oh and TheRob is pretty cocky for a pixfbuf themer.

This looks beautiful, but can anyone here make such a beautiful GTK 2+ Theme, without any emarald and other shitty engies? Can anyone? I love it, but it does not exist yet (not such theme on gnome-look.org, only wallpaper. Can you figure the theme out (only .tar.bz2 theme please. No other shitty engines, .deb packages and malware or slow shit.

1: this is the wrong group. there is a theme request group.
2: the only things you show in those pictures are the panel, the wallpaper, and some icons. there is no display of a gtk theme or idea for one.

I successfull run it: I can't test it too much, because it let me select only Murrine as engine and follow the rules of murrine stable version, while I'm using the git one, so themes saved by gtkThemeMod results not usable for me.. but maybe I've to try more..
Anyway it can suggest something to whom wants to buld a smilar project.. even if I maybe I would say.. please no MONO!! :)

I wasn't able to compile it or run it, and I don't like mono too much, so I'm still going to work on my project. I know c# so I was able to understand what the code did (I think) and it didn't look much like what I want to make, even though it did look good. I am still working on my program, but right now I am side tracked learning how to use glade. I am also studying the actual gtk source code, and have hopefully found some more ways to display and analyze rc code. if not, I will have to build a custom rc parser in order to import themes. right now I only know how to parse to use a particular gtkrc's style, not actually get values from the rc code.

I would also like to say I am working on this program as a way to learn gtk. I know there are other programs that are out there that do similar things, but I want to make something better, help some people out, and learn some while I'm at it :)

Mono is basically the .net framework for Linux ;) It is getting more and more popular, but in my opinion it doesn't work as well as a program that is complied for Linux, using something like gcc or g++.

and sorry if I sounded angry at anyone... I was kind of frustrated with how slow my progress is, and how I really didn't prepare for anything before I jumped into this project :( not to mention theRob's "helpful" comment.

I'm not going to scrap the project, but I am going to put it off until later, once I learn enough to do it. I guess I jumped into this too early, and to be completely honest, I don't even know c! But the program will appear after a while. I am still working hard to learn gtk, c and glade, so maybe in about a half a year to a year the first release will be ready ;)

 I finally understand gtk!!

 by user333 on: Oct 14 2010

Score 63%

Hello :) I have been working hard to begin on the gtk themer, but I was stuck on a few problems. Thanks to Karmel and some googling I've finally grasped the concepts of gtk! This means in a few months to a year (I hope not that long ^^) a testing version will be ready. Until I develop a parser or discover how to use the gtk parser to get values from the rc file, gtk themes won't be able to be opened, only saved. I may start off by making the program that only edits one style at a time, giving the rc code snippet that can be pasted into a complete theme.

I also need help with murrine. I know a little, but if you want to make sure I have your favorite option please fill me on what I missed! What I need is something like this:

glazestyle:
0 = flat hilight
1 = curved hilight
2 = concave style
3 = top curved hilight
4 = beryl hilight

I know these features but nothing else:
animation
colorize_scrollbar
glazestyle
gradients
highlight_shade
lightborder_shade
lightborderstyle
listviewheaderstyle
listviewstyle
menubarstyle
menubaritemstyle
menuitemstyle
menustyle
reliefstyle
rgba
roundness
scrollbarstyle
sliderstyle
stepperstyle
toolbarstyle
glowstyle
glow_shade
contrast
focusstyle
gradient_shades
arrowstyle
progressbarstyle

I have put off gtk and c for now and am working on Java. I am learning a lot of concepts that should help me in gtk. I don't own any books on gtk or c, but I have some great Java ones, and almost all of it carries over to any other language. Don't worry, I'm still trying to make this program ;)

 A working program - finally :)

 by user333 on: Aug 7 2011

I actually made a simple app that will show changes to the theme in the text editor frame. Basically, it is a clone of the Widget Laboratory, but now I have a very simple program to expand from(It's only ~50 lines of code). After it is tested for bugs, a GUI for editing themes will be added.

Right now it only works with Gtk 3 CSS. Hopefully Gtk 2 styles can be implemented also.

I'll try to post the code tomorrow. It's getting really late at night now.

Well, I guess I wasn't able to post the code today, I just got really busy. It is hardly functional now, so maybe it would be best to publish it after implementing the menus.

Also, there is a mysterious error that comes up when I try to preview the default theme, so I need to fix that, too.
