 Shell

Nothing smells better than a nice shell in the morning. What is everyone's favorite shell?

I like Bash because I am familiar but lately I have zsh leanings because it is BSD.

I am currently using ksh as it is the default on OpenBSD and it does everything I do in bash, and it is in the public domain.

I am meaning to use zsh again but need to find some time first, zsh and all its options does 'feel' a bit bloated compare to ksh though and can sometimes have unexpected behaviour; maybe I just need to spend more time to get it to work the way I wanted.

I'm very happy with linux because i can look deeply into the system and try things out.

You talk into it? I do not understand.

Good call on Debian Sid. It is the operating system I have used most my life; since I was 12 or 13 (so about 10 years). Although lately I like Arch Linux more. I tend to use the BSDs quite a bit too.

Yes, a friend told me about Arch and said it goes faster than light ^^ but still a wound to install when I tried.
I stand what I say: Debian is the most quickly OS for an easy install(that I know there is more quick but not as easy to use as)

 What UNIX is about

UNIX:
. . . is not about about freedom.
. . . is not about being user friendly.
. . . is not about being technologically superior.
UNIX:
. . . is simple. (simple does not mean easy; assembly is simple)
. . . is one task per program and doing it well.
. . . is freedom to not adhere to UNIX philosophies.
. . . is everything is a file.
. . . is everything is not a file.
. . . is broken.
. . . is about being consistent.
. . . is inconsistent.
. . . is succeeded by Plan 9.
. . . is meaningless.

And we all know Plan 9 is unusable although very nice by design.

I like UNIX but I feel it could have been done better. Hopefully Linux/BSD will mature into what UNIX should have been. Linux/BSD just needs more critics to push development towards a goal; as of right now, it is going in circles.

The current state of open-source now is to wait for Apple and Microsoft to "innovate" and then copy its features. While truly innovate products are overlooked by the community. Gobo Linux? Pfftttt . . . I think it is an excellent idea, just needs some polish.

I am somewhat skeptic on Unix get succeed by Plan 9 or that it makes sense say we redo Unix from scratch, as those comments are often from people who misunderstood one important aspect, the Durability of Unix.

It is similar to what happened to ethernet:

Robert Metcalf (the inventor of Ethernet), says that if something comes along to replace Ethernet, it will be called “Ethernet”*, so therefore Ethernet will never die.

"Unix has already undergone several such transformations." Ken Thompson.

The thing is Unix adopts new things as they come along, while many technologies just come and gone all the time. There are certainly a lot of innovations if you look into projects deeply, OpenBSD for example have heaps of technology that can't be found in Apple or Windows, and not even Linux sometimes, it is just for a different group of people who actually makes use of such technology and they are so different to the mainstream stuff like Compiz that it is just not been told to the users of those other OS's. On the otherhand OpenBSD users are usually not interested in the Compiz stuff, so it is not even readily available on such OS.

*Ethernet has already succeeded by itself twice. Coax was replaced with twisted pair, then it mas gigabit ethernet.

haha, I don't really think that UNIX needs to redone. Most of the good features have been merged into Linux anyway.

Linux is probably going to be UNIX 2. It killed Solaris and is working on the rest of the UNIXes.

My whole point with the post was that UNIX/Linux are inconsistent when that is one of the original goals. I never was proposing that it should be thrown out.

"I like UNIX but I feel it could have been done better. Hopefully Linux/BSD will mature into what UNIX should have been."

Plan 9 did become UNIX's successor, but only because it was merged into BSD (I think?) and Linux. I just think UNIX needs a little bit of guidance. Windows got an object based shell; where is out object based shell?

I hate hate hate object based programming, but I admit it would be nice to have. I think it would save a few steps when altering certain types of files.
