 Theme Hacking

Recently I have dabbled in a little theme hacking... And now I have a greater appreciation and understanding of the skills involved in the process.

There are many examples of great theme making and hacking around to be inspired by and to learn from.

Although it is possible to use an engine based theme. I personally feel this is a dumbing down of theme hacking. You see it only takes a few minutes to choose a color scheme and click a few buttons to arrive at a so called "theme" based on one of these engines and to be frank it's frightening how "Vista Like" that is!

I feel that although not all of these are bad themes or anything.. but to really get anything unique going on you have to be prepared to get in to the code and learn how to really make it the way you want.

You see when you get down to it. Theme making and hacking calls on a lot of artistic skills and requires competent use of a variety of softwares and learning about how the code works.

For instance one of the famous engines clear looks gained great popularity and one of the main reasons for this was it was the closest thing to "Luna" yuk!

But various Linux users got stuck in and the variety of expression and individuality is just staggering.

But recently the big wigs of linux decided it was to hard for the average user and was not accessible to many web designers or artists... so now they are pushing theme based engine options which is pretty basic stuff and just like appearance and personalization from windows.

This is not what I want. One of the things I loved about linux was the ability to make it look like you wanted it to.


So what do you think about the present state of linux theming.

 Editing index.theme files!

index.theme files - exactly what they seem to be an inventory of the component parts of a linux desktop theme.

The ability to edit them eluded me for ages, then haphazardly I discovered a way to edit them.

There are probably other efficient methods but this works for me:

Simple just archive the target.file then - click the archive to view (not extract) the files inside and click the target index.theme file - it will now open in a text editor where you can then do what you need to with it.

sometimes i just go to the terminal and type

head index.theme

this says what's in it and then i copy it to a text file.

or sometimes i just right-click and open with kate (or gedit)

There is no spoon.

Could not display "/home/------/Desktop/index.theme".
the location is not a folder

Go's the message nag if I try and open it via right click...

Puli's method requires user privileges which is ok...

Padster's method does not work on my rig
but it works for him on his box..

I like my method as it seems more or less idiot proof and requires no permissions or familiarity with the cmd
line.

We should try to learn better on how to use the terminal.
Terminal is the most powerful way to go, linux best feature which makes a significant difference within other OS.

For ex these lines will keep your sistem clean from unused files and packages:

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoclean
sudo apt-get autoremove

this is useful after uninstallations

Can't argue with that use of the command line makes your pc usage more efficient.

Back in the day when I started with Pc's there was no Gui, M$ and Apple were not the main players either.

You are most welcome, I was looking to change the spinning default globe in Ultimate Edition to A chrome design, that I had adapted, And tried (in vain) to find a way to do this, Until I contacted "KuduK" on this site (the guru of cursors) and with in an hour he got back to me with this info. and I thought I would pass on the knowledge ! Kudos KuduK ! And you to have posts that are most helpful ! I am currently checking out "blender underground", Thats gonna take a while for me to catch on !lol Thanks!

very good group. I have found .deb packages of the last GIMP 2.6.7 version on here: http://www.getdeb.net/

There you can find a lot of other packages of programs in newer versions as in your package manager. And you don't need to compile all.

Ahhhh... and another useful link:

There you can find a collection of 117 effects for GIMP. Download the package, extract it and move it to "/.gimp-2.6/scripts" in your home folder. After restart GIMP, refresh the list of scripts in the menu. filter-> Skript-FU -> refresh scripts.

Some of these effects are very useful.

Little known secret about Pidgin that I can’t seem to find anywhere but that I somehow figured out.

Obviously it uses GTK for it’s window engine. Logic tells us that it would use GTK themes in the same way. This is correct.

You can grab your themes from Gnome-Look (only from the GTK 2.x category) and then extract them.

One you have your files, grab the folder that contains a folder with the name “gtk-2.0″ (id est, you would find the “gtk-2.0″ folder then hit “go up one level” one time, and then take that folder) and put it under C:\Program Files\Common Files\GTK\2.0\share\themes or C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\GTK\2.0\share\themes if you’re on 64-bit Windows.

This is the default location of GTK, if you installed it to a different you’ll need to go under /Share/themes from the root GTK install directory.

Then go to your start menu, find the GTK+ folder and launch “Theme Selector”, select the theme you chose from the “Global” list, hit ok, and now restart any GTK applications (like Pidgin). You should have your new theme.
