Just to get things started mention your preferred softwares.

I am a fan and an avid user of both Inkscape open source vector graphics editor and The Gimp image manipulation program.

So a lot of what I talk about will relate to both and accordingly I will drop some links here that I hope you all will find useful should you wish to investigate these further...

I would also like to learn more about both Blender and Xara.

Always have used photoshop and 3d max on windows, now with Linux i do love gimp as in a smart image manipulation proggie, however i do miss 3d max, so I am thinking to have a look, using virtualbox ose, if ill be able to install 3d max on a virtual xp.
Did someone ever tried this?

Good question I know a little about 3dmax and Maya I think that the most popular - open source alternative is Blender which is pretty good and has been used in professional media production in films such as Spiderman2, Big Buck Bunny,
Yo Frankie! as well as computer game animation presently.
And it may be worth looking into Xara Xtreme for Linux (formerly Xara Xtreme LX or Xara LX for short) the open source version for Linux.

I would like to hear from any Blender or Xara users who maybe able to educate us a further...

Sorry in reference to virtual box I have used it to run a few host os such as the usual linux distros, xp,vista and w7 but I think that the with usual limitations of vitrual Os it would be better to get stuck into using the open source alternatives..

I'm not familiar with 3ds Max, but I'm pretty sure that the closest Linux application to replace it would be Blender.

You might also check out Wings3D. http://www.wings3d.com

As far as Xara LX is concerned, it is usable, but it doesn't have all of the features of it's proprietary counterpart Xara Xtreme (for Windows). The project was open sourced back in 2006, but it hasn't moved from the 0.7 version, so the development community is slow going.

Personally, I use Xara LX mostly because Inkscape is too slow. My only gripe about it is it's incompleteness of plugins. The Windows version has the capability of exporting flash animations, but the Linux version does not.

Keep in mind that the tutorials are designed for the proprietary counterpart. However, there are a bunch of them that apply to the Linux version.

I use Inkscape for a lot of stuff. Gimp for major bitmap processing and I also love Rawstudio (rawstudio.org) for processing RAW files from my DSLR.

I've also been experimenting with Blender off an on. I've used it to create our screencast intros over at screencasters.heathenx.org and more recently I've used it a little bit as a video editor for movies shot on my Flip camera.

My main enemy is always time. Too many toys to play with and not enough time. :)

First I have to thank for the great idea to cbk2. I think it is important for all of us to add our thoughts about art and other. I prefer Gimp as my number one software, second showfoto. Gimp has almost all I need. Before I use paintshop pro, Photoshop but realize Gimp has what these programs offer also. I also use Showfoto for coloring adding or changing it after my images are finish with Gimp. So instead of using different programs I did decide to try to Master Gimp and use Showfoto as a second priority. Inkscape, Xara and many others I checked could not find it interested enough like Gimp but these are also great programs for others and they find it good.

I have watched all The Screencasters and have learned everything I know about Inkscape from them..

In my opinion HeathenX and your good self have provided the internets number one place to learn about Inkscape nothing else compares...

If any of you have not seen Screencasters Video Tutorials I would implore you to check it out.

No luck with the icons being included in anything yet...

Sorry about the late reply I have been busy making geometric patterns with Inkscape and swatting up on the Gimp.

I have a few links to check out and tutorials to catch up on from the group members suggestions.

From my experiences with Gnome Color Chooser (GCC), I had multiple problems with its interaction with gnome-appearance-properties. Themes wouldn't preview while I had GCC themes in place. I'm not sure if that has been resolved with more current versions, but it may prove to be an issue.

However, GCC is a great application to customize your system.

Sometimes I wonder if my old i386 is jealous of my cell phone.

Ok so far but it's a maze of buttons..
No problems as yet with displaying themes maybe they have cleared a few bugs out... it now saves a secondary gtkrc file which does not overwrite your original. exports xml and theme files to apparently only got xml so far.

I like the new version got some reasonable results it helps me get a little insight into the architecture in conjunction with the gnome gtk+ theme tutorial:

which I do not know a hell of a lot about to be honest but I understand that gtk is getting a css overhaul in the near future which will probably make theme work accessible to many more people.

That second gtkrc file is the one to look out for. If you have any problems, the only way I found that fixes the problem is to just delete that second gtkrc file.
