kubuntu is better than ubuntu

Applications
Description:

[ironic mode] i'm real about the title [/ironic mode]

This group was actually ment to annoy a friend of mine, but after various reactions i'd like this group to be a sign against hate between fans of different GUIs. Although I prefer KDE I'd miss something if GNOME or XFCE were gone.
If you think like that your welcome to join this group and work for a better communication between kde and gnome. :)

so you started a anti-gnome group on gnome-look,

Didn't think I'd see that in a million years :D

would be stuped enough to do that...

As for kubuntu being better no comment,
since the only difference is the de, and
I reall really really really prefer the
one with the foot!
(and the only place where kde will have a
foot is right up the ass, once gnome has kicked
it)

hey... this group was ment to be an ironic answer to people who do prefer gnome ... no hate because of the gui, main point is to use GNU/Linux ;)

i prefer kde, but this does not mean, that gnome sux. its different and if you like your gui like that, you're free to do so.

ok?

Sure, I understand, kde is the one that has
been around longer and is the one that
Linus Torvalds prefers himself.

However there is something fishy about the
licensing in kde/qt that I don't like.
The kde interface is "OK" (well, to be honest,
it's too damn bloated! so maybe that is me
being too stuped to use it as you said, or
then it's just me being lazy, however, none
of these are why I don't like kde)

I don't mean to be a troll at all, I'm sorry
if I offended you in any way, it was
merely made as a joke :)
(the whole foot thingy)

as the owner of this group said,
the main thing is to use linux/BSD in
the first place!

And sure, I will shut up if you want me to!

Actually, this group is not on gnome-look.org etc... this group is on *-look/apps site. ;-)

So, I could say that this group is started on kde-look.org site and GNOME users are there, but as fact is, these groups can be found on any of these sites, you cant say it's "KDE on GNOME site" ;-)

Hopefully you get the point ;-)

But as group says... I feel it bretty unwise to blaim Kubuntu over Ubuntu because both are different distributions from same distribution, what is just one distribution among other's what use GNU/Linux (Linux) as their OS.
So actually, this group is KDE vs GNOME what is bretty stupid, because both works together and both have different goals to offer for normal user.

KDE is made for users by users....
What can you give back to others?

 Kubuntu v Ubuntu

I have always liked KDE better than Gnome and wondered why people tend to prefer Gnome. I wish Kubuntu was the main version rather than being secondary. It seems Ubuntu gets the good stuff and over time it has to work it's way into Kubuntu.

"That's why I installed Ubuntu, then Kubuntu-Desktop, you have the 'best of both worlds' that way.
In actuality, they are able to share repositories, so you can mix and match without affecting stability.

I know they share repositories but and you can install the same things on both but I bet people are picking up a Kubuntu CD and expecting it to have all the features of Ubuntu and being left with the thought that Kubuntu is inferior. Granted I have not done a clean install of Kubuntu in a few versions now so this may not be as obvious as it was when I installed Feisty.

actionpapst, nice piece of jamming.

Just to open up the topic a little, then why not switch to a distro that includes both gnome and kde? I use gnome and kde, gnome apps in kde, kde apps in gnome. Simple.

Ubuntu can run KDE apps, Kubuntu can run Gnome apps, so switching distros isn't going to change anything. It's more than the programs... it's about the DE itself, how settings are changed, what options are available, etc.

I think the "KDE vs Gnome" fight is stupid. It all comes down to personal taste. I prefer Gnome to KDE, but I'd never try to say that it's better.

I agree. I'm working with KDE but I'm also using gnome applications. If I'm searching for an application I don't care about the libraries it is using (KDE or gnome). I'm just choosing the best app.

It gives me pleasure that KDE and gnome apps are going to use the common communication interface "DBus". That's a good step towards interoperability. I hope that both DE will cooperate also in future. It would be an advantage for all users if projects like compiz run on KDE and gnome.

i use kde so i will give you more information about this.

ubuntu uses gnome which is preconfigured for most peoples daily use.

kubuntu uses kde which is the better way if you want to control everything. you can change (mostly) every detail in programs. This has the advantage, that you can configure eveything, but you may need some time to do so. a friend of mine says he'd need half a year to have everything configured, i need about 2h for the basics, max. 1 week for most of the settings.

so, as a conclusion, i'd say that kde is for fans of having contol over everything, gnome is for fans of easy ans fast configuration.
thats how i got to know these two GUIs, if somebody has a better definition feel free to add it ;)

so what?

That's also my experience. The main difference between both DEs is that in KDE everything is configurable.

Some examples:

You're running the instant messenger kopete and want to be informed when someone writes you a message. Just go to the notification settings and tell it to play a sound or display a popup for this event. And there are many other events too - not only for kopete.

You can also configure it to run a shell script. Sometimes I use this feature to display a message on my DreamBox (sat receiver) to see there is a kopete message incoming.

Another aspect is, that you wont find a KDE application where a keyboard shortcut is not configurable. I like that very much, because I don't want to adapt myself to a DE, I want to adapt the DE to my needs. Same for toolbars.

Some people say that's exactly the problem of KDE - too many options. Well, I don't think so. I like to be able to configure everything. That's one of the reasons why I switched from Windows to Linux. In the end it depends of your liking. I know there are also many people who like M$ Windows.

In my opinion kde is too windows like
and too bloated and absolutely sucks!

gnome is more free (in my opinion has
more options than kde while being more
simpe, while not being bloated, I havent
found one reason why to do the switch
to kde from gnome and believe me, I have
tried, all my friends tell me kde is sooo
much better, and I still think it sucks!)

I have used kde and xfce, and a lot of other
small window managers/de's , and I still
think gnome is the one that is very far
superior in usability and speed!
