We don't like Ubuntu-only stuff

Hello everyone

Who is sick of all these Ubuntu-only stuff in the linux world?

Join this group and let us show the artists that there is more then Ubuntu. Many of these people doing a great work. If they want to give special support to Ubuntu so is it ok, but they should upload an archive like .tar.gz for people who are using one of the many other distributions or one of the BSD's.

Was just gonna try Decibel2 audio player but its only available as a deb. Not installing dkpg just to try this thing out.

Sure, this person could install all the files by hand, OR the developer could provide a source tarball so savvy users can use their package managers to build distro-compliant packages themselves and then share them with others. Which of those sounds more reasonable?

dpkg and pacman are both examples of package managers that come with tools to build packages that can then be installed via apt or pacman, while Arch, Slackware and Gentoo are examples of distros that provide a framework whereby users can create custom scripts to build custom packages that can be handled by their respective package managers. Many people make use of these tools. I understand that Ubuntu users typically want to be coddled, and that many devs are willing to comply. That's fine; do your thing. But that's no excuse to treat each and every Linux user like a helpless child, nor act as though you don't care about open-source software (no source code can be "open" without first being made available).

I know it would be better to have the source tarball, but I was just saying you don't have to install dpkg.

Why don't you just download and install alien for you distro, then you can convert .deb packages to .rpm or .tgz etc...

Dirty hacks are not solutions. Besides, expecting people to convert a binary rather than simply providing them with the source code isn't as half-assed as it gets, given that it requires no work at all.

It is same thing as making closed source software when someone distributes only a DEB package.

It is not even a respectful action toward Open Source community.

IF wanted to do correctly at least one thing, then offer just the source so everyone can compile their own package for their system. And if they don't know how, then they can ask someone else to do it for them.

DEB isn't even a package for Linux Standard Base (LSB) but RPM is. If wanted to do THAT correctly, then RPM is only way to go, not a DEB.

But best thing is... give the source code and problem is solved.

Mainly posting to the topic of the group. Tend to avoid anything ubu. Yeah I just used ar to extract the files so no real hassles there - even ark and file-roller can do it. Just a bit annoyed at deb only releases of stuff.

There are two program that have only deb packages, and this is a bad trouble to compile it from source code: AMDOverdriveCtrl and imageshack-uploader. I don't know how to cmmpilefirst. Second compiles only with patch for support new versions of ffmpeg (that was released later that Ubuntu 11.04) and after registering as developeron their site.

Using Linux since 15 Years, now and having seen most of the highs and lows - including retarded stuff like United Linux.

And every time when a so-called "Pro" comes near me, he tries to convince me that *buntu is the coolest, easiest and most advanced Distro in the whole Universe. And, of course, SuSE sucks because of YaST, RedHat sucks because of their epic failures in the past, gentoo sucks because it's too complicated and so on...

Guys, get real! *buntu never was and never will be the solution to "the Problem".

Oh, and I'm on openSuSE at home and SLE, RedHat, Debian and Gentoo in my Job.

Clearly *buntu free zone. And not only because they're breaking stuff.

I use Sabayon Linux and Mageia. Most things i want is in a repo or you can get the sourcecode.
Maybe they should do it like Archlinux with AUR/yaourt did.
So they can upload their source here and simultaneously add their stuff in the *buntu user repo. Problem solved? o.0
