Okay I have written the beginnings of an essay on replacing OpenDesktop.org at this address https://thinkingwithkeyboard.wordpress.com/2011/05/10/the-issue-of-opendesktop-org/

Yes I know that establining this group may come of as disrespectfull (or at least ironic) but please hear me out.
I completely respect the establishment of OpenDesktop.org, creating a site to bring the FOSS community together like this is an original and ambitious project that clearly has involved a grat deal of hard work on your part. I thank you for having made this site. It has done made some major improvements in my computing life. However I also feel that there are some flaws resulting from there being no previous experiance in such projects that simply can not be fixed. To fix them would be to make something very different.

What I am looking to do with this group is start discussion on what needs to be fixed, replaced, added and removed from OpenDesktop.org technically, aesthetically and even socially. From there I hope that other groups on elsewhere will start making concrete work.

Personally I doubt very much that I have the skills or resources to do the sucessor myself but I'm willing to help anyone who ask for a hand.

 Upgrades, opinions v1 draft A

I would make few big changes to site format:

1. Sidepanels should be brought up and make somekind effor that "search" is easy to find (top right corner like old version). Sides could be on darker "bars" so middle part is for content.

2. Tagging (Max 3) for content by author and by registered users from preadded list (max 5)

3. New voting system (there is own group for that) what would need to tell more accurated the opinions. And maybe a new system next to existing ones (rating + downloads) would be "timeline" what user could use as search criteria (last 24h, 7d, 30d, 3m, 6m, 12m) as addon for rating + downloads. "Show most downloads from last 30 days" or "Show best rating from last 24h".

4. No social networks are forced.
For some people the google, facebook or openID etc would be nice but I like the own registration and I dont want to register to any other service to get using just this or keep this "out" of my other identities.

5. Small visual tweaks. Site banners from KDE SC, GNOME, XFCE etc. So site is easy to notice to belong to specific desktop / technology (Qt etc).

I would say that base of the sites are in great shape but needs just littlebit "moderization"

Okay, I'm not to sure what you meant in some spots but the points on searching and tagging are interesting.

 Getting serious

by RyanMcCoskrie on: May 12 2011

Okay I have two big questions on how to push this successor idea forward.

1: What should the purpose of a successor site be? That is to say a single well defined mission and an rough outline of how to do it.

2: Where (and how) do you want me to start recording ideas?
I was thinking I could start putting together a PDF of suggestions so that when (and if) someone comes to make another site there is a small book on what is needed. But then comes the question of where does it go?

On the other hand it could be a wiki. But who will host that?

Hmm... I'll start looking at what could be possible on sourceforge.net

There is forum.kde.org what takes ideas and others for suggestion. But I dont think that opendesktop.org is still correct place to talk there as it is about other than just KDE SC or KDE (community).

So it should be done here if there is no mailinglist to this.

Wait, what?
How did KDE come into this?

Could you clarify your comment please? I really haven't got a clue what you are talking about now.

Okay everyone. A little while ago I started a wiki for people to write suggestions for possible open source communities. Today I started putting my thoughts on a replacement for OpenDesktop.org on their. I'll finish it at some other time and add some of the thoughts of other people as well.

If you want to see what I have written so far it is at: http://free-ideas.wikia.com/wiki/Communities

while a commercial product, it looks way more professional. And having administrated several forums, few of which had 6 digit user numbers, its quite extensive.
