There are a lot of Windows and OSX rip offs here. Do we really need them?

because i don't like those and agree that there are too many duplicates of the same themes. but i think people should be able to make these themes. some people might make them to show that linux is capable of looking like whatever the theme is a rip-off of. or some people might like to ease the transition between whatever and linux, if it makes them feel more at home. but, yeah, i find that linux is capable of looking so much better than windows/mac defaults, so why bother making it look like them?

Yes, I agree that it is okay to make Linux look like other OSes, provided that the icons, wallpapers, etc. are freely distributable such as saki's Vista-Inspirate, a nice GPL'd icon theme, which he drew himself:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=28352

But I do not think that icons, themes or wallpapers whose distribution is not allowed by their copyright holders should be ripped-off and relicensed under the GPL.

yes, if they directly rip something off they should respect the license. :/

"We should not clone anything because
we are better then everybody" <- this
seems to be the mentality, true? no.

Themes, eg. how a button look, should
not be defined by the os. You should
be able, to buy the theme used in mac,
win, solaris whatev, if it's not opensource.
I don't see why we can't have the same
theme on all os'es.

Themes shouldn't be any different then
other apps, you can buy lots of apps
for linux, eg. Nero, why can't you buy
themes? there should be somekinda
themepage on the net where one can buy
compatible themes for all operating
systems :)

Buy?? "this guy is outta his mind", sure,
if you want something that is not free,
you'll have to buy it, making a clone
of it, and putting it for download, is
not even legal.

Again, I agree. I have no objection against sharing any kind of redistributable themes or buying non-redistributable ones. What I am strongly against is ripping off non-redistributable themes and then sharing the rip-off.

I know the description of the group is too laconic to be clear but long descriptions may not start a discussion.

Afaik a 100% accurate clone is not only
stupid, it's illegal :)

"ripping off" people just pisses off
everybody, what you do is you take
"inspiration" from some themes and then
make it your own in some way, however,
I have seen a lot of these been called
"rip offs" and that is just wrong. period.

Iff, one makes an attempt at making a 100%
accurate clone of smth that is proprietary,
then he should be fkn sued, not bullied at opendesktop.

All in all, linux users (especially new
ones aka noobs) seems to think they
are better then everybody else, and
therefore they cannot understand why
one would take design ideas from smth
thats proprietary (in the linux world
proprietary == bad), when in 90% of
cases (been watching gnome-look recently?)
the proprietary stuff is actually a lot
nicer looking.

Anyways, I'm so tired of this shit I
could go on like this for hours....
...but I guess I've bored you enough
already so I'll stop here.

I'm a law student in the Tel..

I'm a law student in the Tel-Aviv University and 5 years ago (1st degree engineering) I was NOT allowed to use a not-windows OS in some classes, I know that it sounds horribly ridiculous but it started when some (very bad) lecture who has many connections with his family members in high governmental offices in Israel that are making business with Microsoft Inc. in Israel.
In order to bypass that setback, I used Windows98-like themes :D

I'm FOR clones for camouflage/disguise purposes.

Israel = Police state.

I don't get it. Did you install Linux on a machine at school or did he visit you at home to see what operating system you were using?

The lecture: No Laptops with something other than Windows in class.

I'm talking about the small classes (15 - 20 students)

We love Linux because of its configuration that far exceeds ANY other operating system..

You configure it because you love it.
You use it because you love to configure it.
Its yours to love, you look at it, you use it, no one else cares how it looks really.

Myself, I use Amiga-OS themes, because its modern simplicity is beautiful, TO ME!

 Why, you ask

There are many OS X-like theme because it is not easy to make something shiny and beautiful in GNOME. In OS X, the window manager itself has advanced graphical functions just for this, but GNOME don't waste memory like this, and so that nearly every shiny theme has some problems. I have seen many theme named "Leopard, final" and "perfect Mac", but they are liars.

Maybe, if there would be ONE perfect OS X theme, one perfect Windows 7, and (just for fun) a perfect KDE 4, with perfect recoloring abilities, then this site would be a little laboratory of minimalistic and retro themes, and nobody would care about creating new shiny themes.

Oh, but the problem is not just ours. Even Microsoft made a risiko here, because its new Windows themes are so shiny, that they have nearly nothing their own. If you look at a mobile made by SAMSUNG and another one made by NOKIA, you cannot tell from their theme that they are different products with different operating systems.

On the opposite, Ubuntu themes were designed with the sole purpose to make Ubuntu unique. Brown and purple are not very common nowadays, and green (openSuse) is not too often-used either. So, while everybody made himself a whore, Linux themes often remained unique, even if many Linux users copy well-known themes.
