This is a group for those who are tired of all the remakes/remixes and what ever they call them...


There is a ton of remakes but, few themes that feel fresh and contribute with something new. I don't thinks its wrong with using other peoples themes and then modifying them for personal taste, but just changing the color one button isn't really making a new theme in my perspective...


So, those that feel the same way as i do are free to discuss the topic in here =)

I second the idea of providing gnome with themes that are fresh and original.

As a themer myself (view my content) I've always tried to bring something new.

However, it is not easy to create a theme from the ground up. So basically every themer out here is basically modifying an existing theme. Every GTKRC-file (the basis of the theme) is different and difficult to understand because they have been modifying (and sometimes ruined) so many times. Even I - I'm theming now for several years - have to rely on trial-and-error-methods to make a theme, because so many things have been deleted and added or modified in the GTKRC-file.

So, before commenting, you should try to understand that theming is a tedious and time-consuming process.

I cannot help noticing that none of the members in this group have contributing anything here on gnome-look. Try it for yourself before commenting on the work of others. It would add weight to your arguments...

I have tried, i have never said that its easy. It was a long time ago tho. But i would never take up place here with something half-done.

There are many themes were as good as nothing have been changed, and there is no denying that.

This is my opinion and i accept that others do not share my opinion. Those who share it can join this group.

There are also some themes that really stick out, Like LaGaDesk's themes and the Kreator GTK2 and so forth. I want more people like them. Some i have talked to in person in here have downloaded a theme, changed it in a few min an uploaded a theme that looks like the original with very small exceptions. But i am not going to point fingers.

And because of people that denies or almost denies me an opinion because i have no themes in gnome-looks i will start making my own emerald, metacity and gtk in a near future when i have less work to do.

I will not publish a Lucid, Dust or Mac-ish theme.

Never give up! Try again and again until you reach your goal! =)

If you dont like the existing themes
you go and learn gtkrc and make your
own.

its not that hard. really.

Yeah, I think people should try to make new styles, but don't be hard on people who don't. I have to admit most of my themes are not very original, but I like trying to copy things because it builds my skills, so that I can make original themes later. What does annoy me is the 10000000+ vista clones xD

 What defines an original theme

So you don't like the themes (or variations on it) very much.

The question that pops up is then: What defines a original theme and successfull at the same time?

- a metacity-theme with a different button-layout? ah well, read the reactions on the new ubuntu-layout...

- a dark theme? ah well, not every application is readable with a dark theme and is a strain on the eyes after 15 minutes...

- I could go on for hours on the usability of a theme.

The point I'm trying to make is that if you want a theme to be succesfull and widely applied you end up with a mix of things that eventually will look like... tons of other themes out here...
