This is certainly an ambitious project.

It will be very interesting to see how a community designed pc takes shape.

With the recent advent of Google announcing it's new windows killer os and the fact that it will run using a Linux Kernel these are exciting times for Linux devotees and the future of Linux looks like it can only go from strength to strength.

Open Pc is a great concept wish all involved the best of luck with it and if you deliver the hardware with in the
planned target price range I'm buying.

What do you think about an integration of kopete into plasma - I think that's something really useful, especially for the open desktop ;-)

I would really like open pc to be arm-based nettop with ssd disk, video card with high quality free driver, good quality audio hardware, blu-ray and other cool stuff.

I don't know about blu-ray, but i like the idea of basing it on ARM. An Intel graphics card would be nice, since everything about it has been released (correct me if i'm wrong on that). However, I don't know about the availability of ARM/Intel motherboards, since Intel most likely doesn't want to lose market share to ARM-based processors. Blu-ray support would probably make the PC too expensive, though.

Hopefully the keyboard won't have the windows logo. I would prefer a meta diamond like on the sun keyboards or a Tux icon. What does everybody else think?

Oh god, I wish I had some finger paint or anything to get that logo off my keyboard! I would definitely prefer the Tux logo or anything else.

Please think this through well. Honestly, a failed attempt or eternal delay might damage the credibility of any future initiatives.

Why does it not yet exist?
Why have Linux distributions never tried this?
Who are your potential customers, and how do you reach them?
What will draw em across the line in terms of applications/hardware/ease of use?
How much finance will the development and marketing take?
How do you plan to follow up on a successful start?

I urge you to ask companies (Novell, Ubuntu, etc) these questions. A lot might have been thought out before. Potential pitfalls can be avoided. Be smart and start asking the questions to the right people. To be fair, you will find none of the essential answers here.

Maybe it would be good to put it on something portable, preferably a netbook. Maybe, for default software, you should have some lightweight software like Midori, Fluxbox, Abiword, or even better, develop your own software specifically for it.
