How it all begun.

Description:

I thought it would be interesting to know how we all ended up here, after all we only make up 3% of world computer users.

If you want to share your story post here.
I just wondered what made you switch from windows. Your first brush with linux etc. and what you like and what you look forward to in the future.

I personally started on mandrake (2002) (I now use Ubuntu) after fixing PC's for years got fed up with windows. I hate the windows install so much all those driver searches & reboots. Trueimage was my only savior in the windows world that made it all bearable.

I love the fact we now have native nero and look forward to the odd commercial app, but will always use 99 percent open source.
I really hope Linux does not end up super bloated as that is one of it's best features, you can have a nice looking system and still be fast. I love the fact I can install drivers (Nvidia) with out reboots.
And like the forced harddrive checks. I would love to see more native pc games on linux and rid that windows partition once and for all.

 My story.

I started with laptop and Windows_ME. It crashed all the time so I build a desktop and bought and install Win_ME as it was the newest and greatest then. I tried Red_Hat_7.2 but my hardware was too new. So I had to put-up with Win_ME for another year. Than some guy at Office Depot gave me CD with a Knoppix_3.4 or 3.7 (don't remember now) and I tried Linux again. Red_Hat_8, SuSE (whatever number was then) and Mandrake. I liked Mandrake a lot but it had problems downloading files over 2 Gig in size. Than was Fedora. I liked Fedora_7 the most. One day I put my hands on PCLinuxOS_2007. That was it. Superb OS. Everything worked. Till The Famous Great Update when everything stopped working. Now PCLinuxOS_2009.1 is working very nicely. I have it on my laptop. PCLinuxOS doesn't seem to work on RAID systems so on desktop i run Fedora till it got that KDE 4 crap on it and I couldn't do anything with it. Now on desktop i have Open Suse_11.0. It runs on RAID_0. and Still has KDE_3.5.

Knoppix used to be great to 'show off' to all your mates. I occaisionally put in time at a community drop-in centre where we recycle old machines and give them out again - PcLinuxOS has been used with good success.

 my story...

I started using a pc when I was 7...
Everything started with DOS, then win3.1 became...then 95...98...2000...xp...and ALL of them did suck (and still suck)!

Almost 7 years ago I've tried with mandrake, but I left after a couple of days "too messed up for me!"...and again win xp...

5 years ago I met Slackware, and now I can't live without it!

I've been trying ubuntu/fedora, but Slack is Slack, nothing can beat it.
