Pixbuf-VS-Code

GTK
Description:

I created this group, so anyone can tell his/her opinion about preferences, what is you like and what don't like about one or another engine; I think that need just a fast Code based Gtk2 engine with good settings, and all themers here which mainly use Pixbuf engine for creating themes can... just go fishing (mosts Murrine themes are over rank 70!)
Themers, just think more at this.

So, please join and don't be afraid, just say yours about.

Cheers, and enjoy this group :)

 Pixbuf engine? no thanks

why don't use Pixbuf engine?

it is simple:

because a Pixbuf theme is unmaintainable, not recolorable and a resource hog.

if you want super-wonderful scrollbar or toollbar or anything else, there is always Vista.

Instead, why don't GTK devs realize that out there are more themes than Raleigh?

In my honest opinion devs should provide us a simple way to develop all themes we wants; Murrine is in the right way but is not enough, we needs true scripting engine, like CSS.

The CSS engine developed right now will have primary support for images (loading from svg) and very basic one for drawing lines and shapes so the pixmap based stuff is just becoming a standard.

P.S.
If you don't know the pixmap engine has functions that allow you to easily replace certain color in your themes (mask) by any possible variation you like.

no, i don't know this functions. Maybe you refer to "overlay_file" instruction, but this is only a palliative not a cure.

And, anyway, even if this "mask" function allow you to specify a color for your pixmap, the users can't still change colors from Gnome Appearance :)

SVG is a defacto industry standard and has been rolling around decent distros packing Gnome since some years ago.

As a standard, some color instructions can be "easily" replaced so that the XML code get tag values replaced in a neat way.

Anyway, it isn't a priority to get this immediately into the users hands as for the current Gnome developers lineup, but there's always KDE instead of Vista which also packs a pixbuf alike engine without the flexibility of GTK2 and a clear tendency to crash more often than the very KDE.

No it is not the overlay file but the recolorable feature (attribute) that marks an image as recolorable.

I'm gonna repeat this, the function to colo(u)?ri[z|s]e widgets through Gnome Appearance application is not available right now to the average users, yet it is possible doing this without overlaying.

SVG widgets are used everywhere including Murrine and Aurora. What you are complaining about is that most themes are not ported yet, as I see it.

Conclusion: If that function is so important for you to use in "as the author intended"/"static" themes. Then write the software, sponsor a writer, change the themes to suit your needs or wait and see.

This is a shitty world but yet a world of possibilities.

Regards.

It seems to me that we are going off topic. I don't know if there is something in development, nor i know if Cairo used in Murrine draw widgets using SVG. What i now is that right now themes developers don't have (can't) to manage .svg images directly in gtkrc, neither with Murrine nor Pixbuf

...so, i simply can't see your points.

Ciao!
