with the "Horizontal Rainlendar" - Skin
To disable shadows under Compiz, I added in CCSM
under Window Decoration to the field Shadow Windows following text:

First You need to install the Compiz-packages.
Then after restart You can enable Desktop-Effects.
With Ubuntu 8.10 it should go automaticly. Then
open Emerald-Theme-Manager and import the theme
of Your choice. Detailed informations You find
in the web. I`m not familiar with Ubuntu.

Thanks,

I like utilities, making motion on desktop like
the "Vumeter" or here "Gkrellm2" with the
running krellms. The theme here is selfmade
basing on "Invisible". I use it in conjunction
with "Screenlets sidebar and clock".
I'll add a download-file with my settings
and several themes included.
