Description:

Shiki-Colors mixes the elegance of a dark theme with the usability of a light theme, resulting in a hybrid theme. Shiki is designed to be fast and stable.

There is a Clearlooks version for out-of-the-box compatibility with most distros and a Murrine version for eyecandy and speed.

There are 7 color variations (Orange, Blue, Green, Purple, Red, Chocolate, Pink). A matching set of Icons, Wallpapers and GDM themes can also be downloaded separately from gnome-look or at the gnome-colors project page.

You can edit the theme's source (the gtkrc files) for further customization, which is all too easy due to the included instructions.

Must read or clowns will eat you:
* The Murrine version will only work with Murrine 0.90.3 or newer. Yes, you will need to upgrade unless you're using Ubuntu Jaunty.

* The borders are very thin, and titlebars/menubars are unified because of "LOL, ELEGANCE". If you have any difficulty resizing windows, try the included alternate metacity with thicker borders.

* In Ubuntu, for themes (installed through appearance preferences) to be able to theme applications in admin mode, you must type in a terminal:
sudo ln -s ~/.themes /root && sudo ln -s ~/.icons /root

Fedora users can get an installable package of Murrine 0.90.3 (x86) here until is not available in release section:
http://files.getdropbox.com/u/1529612/gtk-murrine-engine-0.90.3-1.fc12.i586.rpm

* In Ubuntu, you can use the official PPA repository for easy installation and upgrades. For Ubuntu Karmic Koala, you can simply run apt-get install shiki-colors to install from Ubuntu's universe repositories. The packages are also available in Debian Sid.

* To fix minor Firefox 3 bugs in Shiki-Colors, install the Stylish add-on and go here (or install the included userChrome.css file following the instructions in README):
http://userstyles.org/styles/10822

* Visit the GNOME-Colors project page for bug reports, feature requests, SVN and more downloads:
http://code.google.com/p/gnome-colors/

* Consider donating a small amount to the GNOME-Colors project if you wish to support it, or to show your appreciation. You can do so by clicking on the "donate" button next to the download section.

Changelog:

4.6 (2009-09-25)
* Add support for Chromium's GTK theming.

4.5 (2009-08-03)
* Update Green, Pink, Orange and Red palettes for better contrast.
* Fix a minor Firefox urlbar color issue in green/orange variations.

4.4 (2009-07-14)
* Add new Pink (Illustrious) color variation.
* Add support for gdm-user-switch applet in Karmic.
* Fix panel matching in Dust-Murrine variant.
* Remove spaces in metacity names for easier RPM packaging. You might have to
remove the old metacity folders or run make uninstall from a previous version.

 Chromium

Chromium picks the color for the frame from GTK's bgSELECTED and then darkens it. The result in Shiki is not so nice. Maybe it's better to override this, by adding "frame_color:#3C3C3C" to gtk_color_scheme (as explained here: http://code.google.com/p/chromium/wiki/LinuxGtkThemeIntegration).

This bug has already been called to my attention, unfortunately... I'm currently on a break from developing due to college, so as soon as I get some free time, chromium fixes will be commited.

Just open "Appearance Preferences". You will find an option to change the selected background color of the theme to anything you like!

If you'd like to hardcode it/make it permanent, you can open the gtkrc source file and change the color value manually. The file has instructions built in, so you just have to follow them.

 Perfection

This theme is almost perfect. IMO think the scroll bars is a little hard to see. Could you highlight it a little? Or perhaps show the theme color then the mouse hovers?

I think the problem is that it's not currently possible to set a highlight color for scrollbars. It just uses the normal color and adds more brightness to it.

Perhaps bugs can be filed to murrine/clearlooks so this type of feature can be implemented? The only other way to do this is with pixmaps, but no pixmaps are used in Shiki to keep everything fast and clean.

 What sound scheme/cursor?

I love this theme. It's amazing, elegant, and a great mix of light and dark. I've themed my entire Ubuntu desktop based on it. Just one issue arises: the default Ubuntu sound scheme doesn't really fit this theme.

What sound scheme do you use with this theme? While I'm at it, what cursor do you use?

Keep up the good work with this theme! I can't wait for the next update.

I like the "Dream" sound scheme. It's not loud or scary like Ubuntu's, when starting the system. You can get it here:
http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Dream?content=75398

As for cursors, I always use the simple white ones that come as default. They're neutral, simple and efficient.

Thanks for your advice.

...when I said "I can't wait for the update", I never expected it to come out on the same day that I posted that comment! :)

Talk about lucky!

No problem, enjoy!

The Shiki update is just a bugfix for Chromium browser, but the icons got a major overhaul.

Yes, it works pretty well and looks great. Now, if only the scrollbars were themed with GTK it'd become my new default browser.

But there is a problem - using custom background image/transparent background, some panel elements stays "themed".

That is intended behavior, and a consequence of including nice gradient panels with the theme.

In order to use custom/transparent panels, you have to disable the ones that are shipped with Shiki.

In order to do this, just open the /themes/Shiki-$COLOR/gtk-2.0/panel.rc file in a text editor, and delete the line which says "Disable for normal panel backgrounds".
