Description:

The original Comix Cursors.

X11 mouse theme with a comics feeling.
The package comes with 12 different mouse themes for X11.
6 colors (black, blue, green, orange, red and white)
2 different weights (slim and normal)

From version 0.8 on the cursors are 'multisize', meaning that you don't need to install one theme for each size, but only one theme, and chose the size in the cursor theme selection dialog.

The full installation also includes left-handed themes, you can choose whatever you prefer from the downloads below.

The cursors are named according to the freedesktop.org cursor naming convention, compatibility and hash cursor names are linked. In addition to the original cursor pack left-handed and opaque versions are still available here.

Please read the README and INSTALL files provided in the source package for installation and packaging instructions, as well as some hints on various issues.

"Vast" versions for visually impaired can be downloaded here: http://www.limitland.de/comixcursors.html . There are links for windows ports by firstfooter, teft and Jus on that page as well.

If you don't like the "hair" line for the text-, vertical-text- and crosshair-cursors, you can download the "NOHAIR"-sources below and replace the source files "text.svg", "vertical-text.svg" and "crosshair.svg" sources in the svg/LeftHanded and svg/RightHanded source-directories and build your cursors. These cursors might look better to you e.g. on dark backgrounds.

GNOME USERS:
------------
Ben has investigated how to configure the cursor size:

* Gnome supports multiple cursor sizes in one cursor theme, but only
distinct sizes: 16, 24, 32, and 48 pixels.

There is no known Gnome 3 application for setting the size of the mouse
cursor. You need to set the desired size in pixels as the value of the
DConf setting ‘org.gnome.desktop.interface.cursor-size’. You can use
‘dconf-editor’ (from the ‘dconf-tools’ package) or ‘gsettings’ to change
DConf settings.

ComixCursors come in sizes 32, 40, 48 and 64.

The best cursors I've seen! I hope you don't mind but I've ported them for Windows users, they can be found here: http://sites.google.com/site/windowscomixcursors/

Extract the archive with 7-zip and copy the files to the windows\cursors\ folder. Change the cursors from the mouse applet within the control panel.

thanks, works great, but how do you access the rest of the pointers in vista. It only let's me change some of them, doesn't even show the other ones so that I can change them?

 Windows limitation...

by Jus on: Jan 6 2010

As far as I'm aware, Windows only has 15 different mouse pointer events that you can change the cursor for. If I were to design my own set of mouse cursors for Windows, I would only make 15, (normal select, help select, working in background etc) but Jens has given us more variety.

Sure you can. Download the .tar.bz2 packages, in KDE4 GOTO: systemsettings : keyboard and mouse : mouse : desing, press that button to install a new theme and select the downloaded file RETURN.
Have fun

 Bug

Open Banshee. Type something in the search box. Hover over the "clear" icon (that erases what you just typed). Notice it uses a different pointer!

The same thing happens in other programs as well, not just Banshee.

Yes, banshee and probably some other apps use the "hand1" cursor, which is not included in the ComixCursors theme, due to the freedesktop.org naming convention (draft). I will get in contact with the banshee dev team, see what we can do.
Thanks for reporting.

Hey shantiq,
thanks, you need a tool called xcursorgen, it's part of the xorg/X11 distributions. This will create xorg/X11 cursors from image files like png, so you will have to convert your .cur files to regular images first. search for xcursorgen and you will find howtos as well.
Have fun.

 on lucid

I can't seem to figure how to get the regular cursor to work in lucid. Normally, just install theme and apply. But in this release, the main pointer doesn't get updated. (every other one does).

On the 64 bit release - same behaviour on two different computers.

Anyone else experienced this and found a workaround?

I ran into the same problem. This is how I fixed it:

1. sudo gedit /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme
2. Change the font name on the intherits line to be the default font you want, i.e. "Inherits=ComixCursors-LH-Blue-Regular"
3. save and logout

Next time you login the default font should work.
