Do you make the changes by hand, or do you have a script that makes it? A public script would be nice, because I like the idea to recolor the default themes, but I don't like the colors you made. Also recoloring all the stock icons would be nice, but that's quite an effort without a script.

Thanks for liking the idea! I hadn't seen it done in all the colors before. there of coerce could be more colors like: light blueish Grey is a popular one

A lot of people I've herd from like most of the chosen colors. What do you not like? let me know maybe we can make it better?

One could make a script I suppose. However That's not how I did it in this very first version. It's just a simple act of changing the color code in 1 file for gtk2 and 2 files for gtk3 then you have to color the window buttons. It's very easy to change the colors actually (It's not easy picking the right one though that takes awhile) the hard part is making the window buttons match and porting that all back to all the window manager's native themes. It would be a little hard to make a script out of that part as it's dealing with images and you have to manually select and deselect certain pixels.

As for "not liking the colors I made" Thanks I think I'm gonna go cry now... Hahaha! Just joking! no worries. Hey since this is open source why not send me your color suggestions I'm not perfect maybe you know a better color :)

Keep in mind it was purposely made darker and less saturated then stock ambiance. what are your thoughts? as always feel free to make your own colors too!

Oh yeah and par your request of recoloring the stock icons! I wanted to do that but doing so earlier would have delayed this release alottt. I'm a bit sparse on time but I will try very hard to recolor the stock icons and release that soon.

If anyone else is interested in joining in the effort let me know I can direct & help them with design.

The issue with the darker and more saturated colors is that the texts written on a dark windowborder colored background (like Firefox url history, Ubuntu One dashboard etc.) can hardly be seen: http://ubuntuone.com/2BPPyhYBZdUxUjv6i7JAAg.

Apart from that, everything else is subjective. I don't like the blue because it has too much red, the green is too cold, red is pale. But that's my personal taste.

I've made a help file for these in GIMP, all you have to do is to change the color of the "RECOLOR ME!" layer, and all the different elements will be recolored. It's not pixel-perfect, but ok for quickly checking a color. You can download it, since it's a derivative of Ambience it has the same license (GPL): http://udionline.hu/fajlok/ubuntu/recolor.xcf

A script would use the same technique, the different shapes can be masked, the highlights, bevels, shadows can be generated with layers etc. Imagemagick has support for layers and different blending methods, I think GD supports it too.

I gotcha! Well the firefox URL issue is being addressed (It's simply the themes Link color code is a little too dark) This is the first release after all.

As for the colors you are suggesting. They look like very nice colors. But I feel they are a little too saturated But I will definitely look into them thanks for the great suggestions.

My overall design goal was for it to be a little less "bright" and clean and get out of your way.
But your correct that's all subjective.

Everyone could choose indipendently gtk theme and color, every color!

The 8 ones you chose were good, but you know that freedom is always better. :)

To start this scripting (and for future reference) it would be useful to know exactly what did you do to personalize the color.
E.g. files edited, exact lines, imgs, etc.

Where you interested in writing a script? I can tell you in detail all the lines needed to be changed. And am totally open to helping you with it.

But the image files them-selfs have to have very specific pixels selected. saturated, colorized and contrast adjusted. Though I suppose that could be scripted with imagemagik or something?

Hey thanks for your reply! I'm sorry I didn't see it till a little late.

Basically the script (Shell script I'm Thinking)
Would run from the directory of the theme you want to recolor. Lets say "Ambiance-Grey" we could rename that folder to anything we want later.

The script Would ask for an input of your color preference eg: #5E9056 (A shade of green)

Use a app like Kcolor chooser or any online HTML notation color chooser. to get this color

Then the script would take your input #5E9056
and change 3 files to make this color change happen...

It would change a value in line 5 of the gtkrc file the string we need is "nselected_bg_color:#COLORHERE" located in ThemeName/gtk-2.0/gtkrc

Then it would change the values in 2 files in gtk-3.0 gtk.css and settings.ini

the vales to change would be:
@define-color selected_bg_color #COLORHERE;
in gtk.css

and
"nselected_bg_color:#COLORHERE"
in settings.ini

Belive it or not. The Theme is setup in such a way that those two values effect everything. And change all the colors.

The only other part is perhaps the color of the black or white panel or toolbar. But thats a bit more complicated.

You can talk to Dareus (See above) He wrote a pretty cool script already.

Whoa! that should not be happening! I've tested it on 10 (real) boxes and have not seen the GTK3 theme behaving like that on Xfce.

Mind if I ask you a few quick fallow up questions so I can isolate this issue:

Did you install this VIA the tar.gz package? or the PPA and .deb?

If you installed via our tar.gz package did you install the theme in your /usr/share/themes/ directory and not the .themes directory in your home?

What version of Ubuntu are you using?

I ask this because it looks like the GTK3 is not kicking in, This might be because of incompatible theme engine or improper installation.

I will look into it right away.
So far it's working here.... But I will check into more.

Oh I just noticed that it looks like you are using arch Linux.

If thats the case please make sure you have the fallowing installed and retry:

gtk2-engines-murrine (Version 0.98 and newer)
gtk3-engines-unico (Version 1.0.1)

Let me know how it goes. I hope it works.

That issue you are seeing is related to a flag we have to set to fully support LXDE and make Xfce look a little better. That is the unfortunate side effect we are working on a fix for that (someone has submitted one to us and we are testing it.)

In the mean time you can try editing the gnome-panel.RC file in the gtk-2.0/apps directory of the current color (Ambiance Blue in your case)
and comment out: widget "*Panel*" eg it would now look like #widget "*Panel*" be careful not to change anything else click save and reload the theme. This may not work depending on your xfce version to reverse simply uncomment the line.

Hmm Thats strange. Can you double check if you are using "Ambiance-Blue" and not "Ambiance-Blue-XfceLxde" that version is only for Xfce and LXDE.

Are you using unity 2D or 3D?

I enjoy these variations of the Ubuntu themes very much. There is just one small thing I would like to change, and that is the default text color. I know grey text is in fashion, but I would prefer it black for maximum contrast and sharpness. Fiddling around in gtk.css, settings.ini, gtkrc etc., I couldn't get the text to change to black. Could you give me a hint what to do? text_color doesn't seem to do it, everything stays the same.

I recall makeing such changes in prototypeing other themes. But I can't recall how ambiance does it off the top of my head.

However I Think what you may want to have a look at is the @base_color and @bg_colors variables I want to say thats it as well. I would make sure to make the exact same changes across the Settings.ini GTK.css and Gtkrc files. And make sure to reload the theme. (Load a different theme then load the modified theme again)

A good way to isolate what value controls what is to change something to a arbitrary color like bright white and you will be able to see what value does what. (If you can't figure out how to effect a cretin widget or aspect)

I remember that effecting the menu text colors. But forgot it also effected the text color. in some widgets.

Whoa Really? thats weird. I've found that sometimes purple looks sorta blue on dimmer and unsaturated displays (Like my Thinkpad T61's) but not vice versa. Thats good to know it looks that way for you. (We are working on improving it and need to know your thoughts)

Keep in mind these colors are are darker then normal ambiance and radiance by design. The Blue is sort of a Redish Purple Blue. (But not meant to look purple)

We are in the process of refining and making the colors more "perfect" for the next release of this theme. "12.04.1" Coming in 1-2 Mouths.

If you have any Ideas for colors I urge you to send your suggestions (In the forum of a HTML color code) Keep in mind we want to use darker colors and all suggestions must be under GPL or CC.

Thats an interesting thought. I guess if it where like that it would be on the same color scale as stock ambiance. But it would also be a very light blue.

In this theme we have historically always tried to have the colors be darker then stock ambiance. As alot seem to like that as well.

I'm not sure. Should we stick with darker colored ambiance or go for lighter?

I only wanna say, you do a great job :) I know it's very hard to maintain such a huge number of variants, though it seems to be easy. But you might want to correct the dark color.
