Installation

Arch Linux

Just install xcursor-pixelfun package from AUR

Others

Unpack contents to /usr/share/icons or ~/.icons, then choose theme via your system's settings manager.

Well, to be absolutely sure that you will have ONE CURSOR THEME in every place of your system, you must follow these steps:

1. cd /path/to/unzipped/archive
2. sudo rm -r /usr/share/icons/default
3. sudo cp -r pixelfun3 /usr/share/icons/
4. sudo cp -r pixelfun3 /usr/share/icons/default
5. cd ~
6. mkdir .icons
7. ln -s /usr/share/icons/pixelfun3 .icons/default
8. Choose a mousetheme via sistem's settings

After all it would be better to reboot, and I think your problem will be solved

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me out. After following your instructions exactly the mouse cursor has successful been changed all across the system. However now there are three options in the settings window. Should I just leave it as is?

I have the same behavior, that's because you have 'default' directory in .icons + 'default' and 'pixelfun3' directories in /usr/share/icons.

Of course it's sad, but this method really works!)

All you need is add the theme to /usr/share/icons and install to and set the theme in alternatives.
No need to rm and link things.

Please ignore my previous reply. You're right. Theme folder name is wrong. Needs to be updated. I hope the theme maker is reading this.

Just some explanation: symlinking .icons/default is needed for some apps, e.g. Steam, as described in Gentoo wiki (that information was in Steam article, now it's deleted)
