Oxygen 2

   1.1

System Sounds

Score 61%
Downloads:  2751
Submitted:  Dec 28 2011
Updated:  Dec 30 2011

Description:

This is a brand new startup sound, designed to be compatible with the Oxygen sound theme. I was bored and sick of the same startup sound, that comes from KDE 4.0, and I decided to sequence my own.

There may be bugs, or improvements, that can be made.

How to use it:

1. Download it to a folder in your /home partition, or, if you want to use it system-wide, /usr/share/sounds is the place.

2. Run System Settings, and select Applications and System Notifications.

3. In the dropdown list saying "Event source", select "KDE Workspace".

4. Select "Start session". The default sound will be called KDE-Sys-Log-In-Short.ogg. Press the button next to this name, and select this sound.

5. To test it, press the "Play" button at the left side of the name

Sequenced entirely with a Korg M50, Qtractor, Sound Blaster Live! and free LADSPA plugins.

Changelog:

1-pre: First release.
1: I was waiting for some feedback to actually release this.
- Bugfixes: It seems that some notes were out of sync in 1-pre release. I just fixed that.
- Now I provide 5 asterisks. I need your help to fine tune them, to meet KDE's needs.
1.1: Bugs, bugs, bugs.
- No, the second version wasn't supposed to be longer ;). I just fixed that.
- The tar.xz was giving some trouble, so I scrapped that.

Updated! Test the new "asterisks"; I need help finding a place for them and fine tuning them.

Is this an updated Start Session sound or is it for something else? I prefer the older Start Session sound over this one, but that may just be me. I'd love to hear an End Session sound though.

Yes, I'm trying to update the startup sound. I *NEED* some feedback to improve this, since I want this sound to be better than what we have.

The new beginning of the sound is nice, but it feels superfluous after being used to the first version. As someone who's composed for solo piano it sounds like a great beginning of a piece but it feels unnecessarily long for a start up sound. Of course others may disagree with me, especially if they don't already use the first version of the sound.

After installing your sound I found the Linux Mint Debian Edition start up sound and I almost went with it instead of yours. Let me see if there's an easy way to share it with you.

After checking the Mint startup sound again I realized I was thinking of the longer KDE systemlogin sounds, and your sound is much better than that one, although I still prefer the shorter (older) version.

I'm a bit confused with "the shorter" vs "the longer" version. Can you elaborate a bit on that? Is /usr/share/sounds/KDE-Sys-Log-In-Short.ogg the long version? Is it the short one? Is it something else?

This sound is designed with the Oxygen theme in mind, and to replace the Oxygen start up sound (and other sounds) with something better, but compatible and in the idea of the current theme. There are lots of better concepts than Oxygen for start up sounds, but they are not compatible with Oxygen (for instance, the KDE 3.5 start up sound, I really love that one)

I mean the longer (newer) :15 version of your sound compared with the slightly shorter :12 version I got yesterday from this page. The extra three seconds may seem a rather minor quibble but the way it starts now feels a tad jarring when I login to KDE.

The new version shouldn't be longer.

I'll fix that. Thanks!

Now it's fixed. The revised version is 11.5 seconds long, instead of 12 or 15.

You might be having bugs with your tar.xz libraries, but that doesn't matter anymore; I switched to the old but reliable tar.gz format.

Same error. I don't think it's the xz or gz but rather the tar aspect that's broken. I'm able to create and extract other tars but cannot untar yours. Any chance of a zip?

Reproduced.

This deserves more research on my part; I'm using KDE 4.8 RC1, and there may be a major bug in Ark that's causing this, since I've used Ark to create this compressed file.

If you thought of getting a new default sound startup, it's well done! It's fresh and following the previously one (me to was getting bored of it).
Beside just to know is the beta of kde 4.8 this interesting? Because I saw a lot of person go ahead and I'm affraid of the bug of the snapshot I try^^.
